jlhoots Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Late to the party, but I don't care for 27th Man. Stylings Of Silver - now that's a great album!! (IMHO) Quote
Dave James Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Another for The 27th Man. With regard to Like Someone In Love, Marc Myers from the JazzWax blog had an interesting piece on this last week. All the tunes from this and A Night In Tunisia we're cut at the same time. When Alfred Lion realized they had enough material for two full Messenger LP's, they were deliberately broken up into softer (LSIL) and harder (ANIT) releases. Marc has good things to say about both, but especially about Bobby Timmons. Interestingly enough, when he put these on his iPod, he created a playlist and randomly collated all the tunes. He said that made for a very interesting and satisfying audio experience. I thought that was a pretty cool idea. The only one on this list I'm tempted to get is the Leo Parker. I have Rollin' With Leo already, so it would make for a nice set of baritone bookends. Up over and out. Quote
Big Al Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Another vote for Mother Ship. That album SMOKES! Dave, I haven't heard Rollin' with Leo, but Let Me Tell You About It is a very hot jumpin' session, for lack of better terms. It swings like crazy! I have GOT to get Stylings of Silver! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 just days after I lose my job, BN has to do this? the deletions of RVG's is sort of unnerving b/c like someone else said I thought they were permanently in print. Pulling "Our Thing" OOP (again) what the hell? Luckily I have it. Same for the two Blakey's on the list. "The Sounds of Jimmy Smith" I have considered b/c right now the Mosaic is still packed away somewhere, hopefully its not missing. The Hank and Lee sets are packed in the same box. Quote

poetrylover3 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Thanks. The only one I might be interested in that I haven't already got is the Silver, 27th man album. Anyone got any views on that? MG This is one of my favorite Silver albums. It features the Brecker Brothers and a very engaging tune called Gregory Is here. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Thanks for posting the list of non-BN deletions, Ubu - I WANT that Dakota Staton/George Shearing one!!!!! Time for being lackadaisical about it is over! MG Quote
king ubu Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 I guess even those not into Kenton should give City of Glass a chance... also Showcase is nice. And then, the Basie Bond album is a very good one! Some great Lockjaw solos there! The Don Ellis may not be to everyone's taste, but from the albums I've heard, I still consider the Monterey one the best! And finally, Sheila Jordan's Blue Note album is one of the most special (and dearest in this household) ever committed to disc Quote
Daniel A Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) This one is essential: Stan Kenton - City Of Glass Edited November 24, 2008 by Daniel A Quote
paul secor Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) Any thoughts on Rouse's Bossa Nova Bacchanal? Edited November 24, 2008 by paul secor Quote

AndrewHill Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Those Don Ellis sides are also very nice, especially Monterey. Quote

king ubu Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 oh, and "Capuchin Swing" is a fine album but it sounds horrible - it's one of those RVGs I rarely ever play because of that... couldn't tell what exactly is the problem... but I wonder: does anyone here have a similar reaction to it? Quote
porcy62 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 On as side note, why do they delete these title? No selling? I guess we'll see it in some vinyl (audiophile or not) form in the future. Am I too malicious? Quote
Big Al Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 I like the Rouse. If I didn't have it, I'd get it simply because I'd kick myself if it went OOP before I grabbed it. Plus, it's worth the price of admission for the extra track at the end, a quintet track from an aborted session with Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins. It does seem kinda strange that they're deleting some of these titles; doesn't it seem like a bunch of these have been out less than five years? Quote

Late Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Plus, [the Rouse title] is worth the price of admission for the extra track at the end, a quintet track from an aborted session with Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins. My sentiment exactly. That's one of the best bonus tracks I've ever heard on a CD. That, and "The Collector" on Wayne Shorter's Adam's Apple. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 I'll probably purchase at least one of the Silver releases. Stylings Of Silver has Hank Mobley and Art Farmer on the session. A plus for sure. Quote
michel1969 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Mothership is da bomb, totally!! Some of the most amazing and eye-opening Lee Morgan ever. Must have, must own, must hear material -- if ever there was. Thanks for the info. This kind of enthusiast report makes me buy a record !! I don't know this one. Just ordered it @mazon.fr Quote
WD45 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Nabbed that Leo Parker from Amazon. Needed another title to put me into free-shipping land anyway. I have wanted it since it was released, but never bought it. At least they let us know when things are going to vanish... Quote
