Elissa Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 Isn't Treat it Gentle the book with that most amazing story of Bechet's grandparents meeting in Congo Square? I think that maybe one of my favorite jazz stories ever. Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 Couldn't disagree more, Larry. I find both Kenny Davern and Bob Wilber really wonderful players. Davern in his peeweerussellesque oddity and Wilber as a very complete musician. If I should pick one of them, I'd go for Davern, though. What are your thoughts on Ken Peplowski? Not a fan -- he mostly strikes me as very logy and/or kind of like a "chubby kid," if you know what I mean. On the other hand, I have heard a few things I warmed up to, especially his playing on this excellent Carol Sloane sings Ellington album: http://www.amazon.com/Dearest-Duke-Carol-S...e/dp/B000PC6E9O Quote
Late Posted April 8, 2020 Report Posted April 8, 2020 Just finished watching the documentary of the same title: Perhaps the only documentary in existence where both Wynton Marsalis and Woody Allen are interviewed. (Bob Wilber, George Wein, and Bechet's son are also interviewed.) It's a good doc with some excellent film clips from the period (including Bechet's wedding). Warmly recommended. Quote
Jim Duckworth Posted April 9, 2020 Report Posted April 9, 2020 In looking for the above, I found the entire text available for free from Archive.org. Quote
