I bet you don't get mushy peas in the States. Something of a north of England delicacy, served with fish and chips.

God, I hope not; what a travesty!

As for fish and chips, of course we've got them, at least in urban areas. Heck, we even had chains of the places (H. Salt) since at least 1971. I won't pretend it's at the top of most American's lists of places to go, but it's available. I love the stuff myself, but to be fair, it's only because of the malt vinegar. With enough vinegar, I can eat damn near anything...

There used to be a good fish'n'chip place in Allston/Brighton (part of Boston)----pretty sure it's gone now, but there are plenty of others.

There are places in SF, too, but even more places that specialize in other dishes but have a halfway decent fish'n'chip on the menu. Anywhere near either coast in the States I imagine you can get fish'n'chips if you look. They may not taste exactly the same as English fish'n'chips, but that's the way it goes. There are also lots of places back East that sell fried scallops with french fries (chips.) Not exactly my cup of milk, but lots of people seem to like'em. BTW, we certainly don't call the places that serve fish'n'chips in the US "chippies." If you fling that term around it may cause some misunderstandings.

Whitby and places in the UK.

Whitby, Scarborough and Brid have some of the best fish & chips in the UK.

Not forgetting Harry Ramsdens original place up on the outskirts of Bradford.

Never saw fish and chips in the US but they were around in Canada - with whitefish subbing for the cod. I prefer the cod.

The original plaice on the edge Ilkley Moor which has (had?) the 'posh' section with chandeliers is/was the biz !

There's a place just up the road from me (country restaurant with bar) that serves marvelous fish and chips. I don't know where the owners are from, or how this got on the menu, but it's hugely popular and is offered as a special every Tuesday night.

Clearly, someone traveled somewhere and brought the dish back home.

Fish and chips are widely offered in restaurants and pubs across the UK and are normally quite pleasant.

But there's something a bit different and special about those served in a dedicated fish and chip shop.

When I was young we used to have a fish and chip van come around the RAF camps I grew up on. They were wonderful fish and chips. I suspect they'd be shut down under health and safety today.

Back in the early '70s there was one about 2 blocks from work. Once a week I'd go for a lunch of fish and chips with a frosty mug of beer.

Kearny, New Jersey, just northeast of Newark, historically was an area where many Scots and Irish immigrants settled. Ridge Road, the main shopping thoroughfare in town has at least 4 or 5 pretty authentic fish and chips eateries. Good eatin'.

Scottish meat pies also!!
