Teasing the Korean Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 In a previous thread, MG and I discussed how much we love the Peggy Lee/George Shearing "Beauty and the Beat" LP on Capitol. I stumbled across the CD reissue today and was surprised to find out the crowd sounds were faked, and that this was a studio session. Actually, I'd always assumed that the introduction by the MC was added later in the studio, but I'd never guessed the whole audience was added later. Guess I'm a sucker! Anyway, the CD has been remixed from the masters MINUS the crowd sounds. They've added a couple of bonus tracks to boot. Has anyone heard this CD? I can't imagine it without the crowd sounds, but I think I'm going to have to pick it up. Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 Short CD, even with the bonus tracks, (if that's a problem), but the music is excellent. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 I've had this cd for years. . .and yes, the sound is wonderful. I am not as familiar with the lp with added applause so it's not a problem for me. . . . Quote
jazzbo Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 PS: Same happened with the Basin Street performance on Capitol. . .and Collector's Choice released a wonderful cd of performance tapes. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 The sleeve notes to the LP (if I recall correctly - you can check TTK) said something like the sound system broke down so the audience couldn't hear the music, but the recording equipment picked it all up. I thought at the time - why are they applauding, then? But this was 1960 and I wasn't nearly so cynical at 16 Then, when I got the CD, it became clear. Didn't realise you didn't know that TTK. shaft Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 Hi! Yeah I have them both versions on CD. First I got a copy of the newly mastered without applause and liked it very much. Then I stumbled over an old japanese CD that had the introductions etc. I like them both. SQ is a bit better on the new one but guess which one I play most....... I kind of like the talking by Peggy and the applauses it puts me a good mood somehow /Shaft Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 14, 2008 Author Report Posted November 14, 2008 I always loved it when she said, in that husky voice, "Let's hear some more of that Shearing sound." They should have put that as a bonus track at the end of the studio version CD. Quote
DMP Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 In the great tradition of phoney "live" recordings! Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 14, 2008 Author Report Posted November 14, 2008 In the great tradition of phoney "live" recordings! PLEASE don't tell me her Basin Street album is fake. Is the Machito live at the Crescendo album fake live? It sure sounds it. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 one of my fav faked live recordings is "Brother Jack McDuff: Live!" "The Front Room is proud to present America's most exciting jazz organist, Brother Jack McDuff!!!" *nasty splice with applause* I wonder if "CTI Summer Jazz @ The Hollywood Bowl" would be considered a fake live recording b/c the electric bass and drum parts were overdubbed, but maybe not b/c everything else is from the on location recording.
