clifford_thornton Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 Sad news - we can pray (or whatever you want) for his recovery. I believe that this is serious, and hope that some of you can help this great artist. Thanks a lot. Massimo Sent: Saturday, November 01, 2008 11:18 PM Subject: BENEFIT/DONATION for my friend HUGH HOPPER, the legendary SOFT MACHINE bass player Dear MoonJune friends Not sure if all of You know that my very dear friend and legendary Soft Machine and Soft Machine Legacy's bass player Hugh Hopper, had recently, since last June, some health problems and complications that didn't allowed him to do any gigs since early June. Hugh was suffering from back pain for few years and suddenly in June got worse. Hugh had to cancel concerts in Mexico with Chris Cutler, and 10 shows tour of Japan with Yumi Hara-Cawkwell, and series of his solo concerts, or concerts with Soft Machine Legacy and Delta Saxophone Quartet during the last Summer were compromised. While treating very bad lower back pain, Hugh was having blood tests, and in hospital doctors have discovered beginning of leukaemia and that his blood had very low platelet-count. Hugh started to have an ongoing and painful chemotherapy treatment which was going relatively well but Hugh also suffered from some minor infections after the course finished. Hugh is doing better now, but still in hospital and only occasionally was able to go home. In any case Hugh Hopper has a very positive outlook on life and accepts life in a positive way and we all hopperfully hope, this hassle will end as soon as possible. Sadly, with the lack of revenue resulting from his inability to perform since last June, Hugh and his family (his lovely wife Christine and 13 years old daughter Rosa) are currently in a less than comfortable financial situation - this is the reason for this VERY SPECIAL NOVEMBER SALE by MoonJune Records / MoonJune Global Media, offering all Hugh Hopper related cds for purchase, with profits going to my old friend and one-of-a-kind Hugh Hopper. 100% of the profit from sale of the below mentioned cds will go Hugh Hopper: HUGH HOPPER Numero D HUMI (HUGH HOPPER & YUMI HARA-CAWKWELL Dune http://www.moonjune.com 50% of the profit from sale of the below mentioned cds will go to Hugh Hopper: SOFT MACHINE LEGACY Steam SOFT MACHINE LEGACY Soft Machine Legacy SOFT MACHINE LEGACY Live In Zaandam http://www.moonjune.com 30% of the profit from sale of this particular cd featuring HUGH HOPPER will go to Hugh Hopper:: CHRIS STASSINOPULOUS Light In The Dark Featuring HUGH HOPPER, DAVID CROSS, ALEX FOSTER, BARRY FINNERTY, JOE BERGER and more http://www.moonjune.com/lightinthedark-N.htm 30% of the profit from sale of the rest of MoonJune Records catalog will go to my dear fuzz-bass buddy Hugh Hopper. GA Russell Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 RIP. I have a lot of nostalgia for the many 70s albums I have him on. Quote
NavSJ Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Very sad to hear that he did not come through and survive his illness. He was an excellent musician, and those Soft Machine records are all classics. RIP, Hugh. Quote

Niko Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Very sad - first Elton, now Hugh. From one of the most influential bands in shaping my musical tastes. same here, it's not only that he shared my birthday and that my late dad (who had the same disease) said those two soft machine lps were the two real good ones in his small collection (i must have been 13 or 14 then but i still remember reading that sentence "hugh hopper has joined the group..." on the back cover of volume two for the first time) grrrrrr! playing hopper's "memories" now, maybe not representative of his work but one of my favorite/formative/most treasured pop songs Quote
king ubu Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 (edited) Sad news Though, to be honest, the whole Canterbury scene is something still ahead of me... I dabbled here and there, but never really dug into it deeply so far. The more recent tribute bands (Soft Machine Legacy, Soft Heap) were quite good, too, from what I've heard. And Hopper also played with Carla Bley! edit - a link for those who doubt: http://www.jazzwisemagazine.com/component/...10854?task=view Edited June 8, 2009 by king ubu Quote
mikeweil Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Very sad news, I had overlooked the post about his illness due to me being busy moving etc. - R.I.P. Quote
