Stefan Wood Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 Stumbled across this lp by accident, as I was making a purchase of classical lps for auction. In have NEVER heard of this session. Check out the line up: Jimmy Owens, Joe Farrell, Garnett Brown, Don Friedman, Barre Phillips, and Joe Chambers for The Fugue #2 Take 1 (1966); and Tyrone Washington, Heiner Stadler, Reggie Workman, and Lenny White for Heidi and All Tones (1971). From the Collective Black Artista Inc in New York, released on Musical Hertiage Society Records (?). Has anyone else come across this? Quote
marcello Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 I used to have this on LP. Maybe I still do. I'll give a look, but I think I got rid of it. IIRC, it's one of those dates that looks better than it sounds. Nope. It's long gone. Quote
JSngry Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 Picked it up back in the day, on Stadler's Labor records. I like Stadler & I like the record, but yeah, it's "different" in a perhaps unexpected way. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted October 28, 2008 Author Report Posted October 28, 2008 I just listened to the lp, and I think it is very good. Tyrone really stretches out; some of his best playing on record, IMO. Quote
jlhoots Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 I had the vinyl many years ago. Probably somewhere in Japan now. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 I had the vinyl many years ago. Probably somewhere in Japan now. Me too. Quote
Dave James Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Chuck, When did you move to Japan? How is it you don't know what part of the country you're in? When you figure it out, find Hiroshi Tanno and say "hi" to him for all of us. Up over and out. Quote

Utevsky Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 I know that LP passed through my hands once. I may have made a copy on reel-to-reel tape. It was pretty wild as I recall. Quote
mracz Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 I know that LP passed through my hands once. I may have made a copy on reel-to-reel tape. It was pretty wild as I recall. Just downloaded it from emusic yesterday and started listening to it on the bus this morning. Tyrone goes for it. Thumbs up! There's something of the George Russell feel about the writing/concept, and I look forward to hearing the rest... Quote
Stefan Wood Posted February 12, 2012 Author Report Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) Picked it up today at a local cd store. Did not know this is a 2 cd set! Malcolm Addey does the remasters. Listened to the first disc last night, and the bonus tracks are excellent, in some ways better than what had been originally issued. "Bea's Flat" is outstanding (written by Russ Freeman). The breakdown: No Exercise - Jimmy Owens, Tyrone Washington, Garnett Brown, Heiner Stadler, Reggie Workman, Brian Blake Three Problems/Heidi/U.C.S./All Tones - Tyrone Washington, Heiner Stadler, Reggie Workman, Reggie White Bea's Flat - NDR Big Band w/ Manfred Schoof, Albert Mangelsdorff, Wolfgang Daumer, Lucas Lindholm, Tony Inzalaco Love in the Middle of the Air - Dee Dee Bridgwater, Reggie Workman The Fugue #2 - Jimmy Owens, Joe Farrell, Garnett Brown, Don Freidman, Barre Phillips, Joe Chambers Edited February 15, 2012 by Stefan Wood Quote
Stefan Wood Posted February 15, 2012 Author Report Posted February 15, 2012 Up, added personnel listings for those who asked. Quote
