Yet another genius have joined the ranks of the Universal Music Group design team...

Bizarre stuff...wish I could find "better" pictures...you got to hold it in your hands to appreciate the full scope of the idiocy.

What an absolutely hideous design! But then Verve resissue design has often been a triumph of style over content (viz. the gatefolds of recent years). Pretty ironic when you remember those iconic Norgran and Clef LPs.

Yeah, and the booklet cannot be separated from the box (at least I have not figured this one out yet). What you (Verve) are telling us is that you have a blatent disregard and/or lack of respect for the customer. Morons ...

And another thing! On the gatefolds they had all these pages in the booklets, with plenty of space for intelligent essays (somewhere in size between the RVGs or Miles boxes, both of which typically have interesting essays) but they rarely if ever included them. Just filled the pages with crappy, meaningless graphics.

The box reminds me of those collector's tins that Disney released some DVDs in recently. Part of me appreciates their efforts to be clever in their packaging, but a lot of their attempts don't wow me. This one included.

verve .. MY FAVOURITE RECORD COMPANY.......

Their packaging ( plus price and generally insane reissue content of their disc) most often cancel my purchasing jones more than any other company.

BUT.. I understand designers being told to come up with something "new and original"

The person who should be kicked in the rear is the departmental head who signs off on these things. If he thinks this type of packaging enhances sales..... he ( or She... gotta be politically correct) needs a new job.

Wouldn't surprise me if they issued some multiple-disc set in the shape of a loaf of bread wrapped in cellophane (oops, better not give 'em ideas)...

Don't give them any ideas.

You should see what the original packaging looked like!

Through a secret source at the label, I was able to get an image of the ad that was to run in the major jazz magazines for the set with its' original packaging.

My source also told me the reason they gave up on the "Bird" packaging was because of a number of reasons.

1.) The cds would get stuck on the bird's legs and sometimes limbs would be broken trying to remove the cd. PETA really would have gotten on them for that.

2.) The bird was prone to flying away, and in doing so, the set would be lost. The management figured customers might not be too happy. Customers don't mind Tetanus, but having your $50 set fly away MIGHT be too much.

3.) The bird would need feeding, and if not fed, would die and make a terrible smell.

4.) Sometimes the bird would bite the box set user. Actually, my source says it happened quite frequently.

My source says the day was saved when they realized that they had a bunch of those AOL tins, so they used what they had and asked their friends if they had extras. It was a happy day at the label when they realized they had found enough AOL cd tins.

Once again, I'll mention that Malcolm Muggeridge resigned as editor of the U.K. "Punch" magazine because he said that the things that happened in the real world were more ridiculous than anything that they could make up.

Anyway, there's a complete Bird on Verve box elsewhere.

Nothing shocks me anymore. It just seems to get weirder and weirder.

I like the cheese wheel box. :tup

My favorite funky themed box was the Hot Tuna - In a Can box set.

I'm sure glad Verve scrapped the Charlie Parker set being attached to a live bird. Now that would have been too literal. You should have seen the other packaging ideas they had in the works for their other sets. One was a Johnny Hodges set attached to a rabbit. But the Coleman Hawkins "Hawk" set that was under development flew away with the Hodges set.

It was tragic. :P

That art work is pretty bizarre but as long as you can get the cd's out with incident I guess it can be lived with. Beyond that all I can say is "Beam me up Abie!!! :P
