marcello Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) I had Joe Locke's Rev-elation cd at the #1 spot on JazzWeek for eight straight weeks a couple of years ago and to tell you the truth, it didn't help cd sales much. It DID help with name recognition and some choice gigs. That can be achieved by sending promos to the best people (by reputation and "influence") and/ or the best stations in the country yourself. I mean, what does it really mean to have a station in say South Dakota play your cd 100 times? I would rather have it played in NYC, LA, the Bay Area etc. ( for the greater population and fans) and save the promo for a print review, or send it to a promoter. You can be very effective by sending out 100 promos in the USA. I put as much, and sometimes more, effort in getting releases played overseas. They pay a decent royalty, and frankly, that's where the audience is. I would never pay for radio promotion. It's just not cost effective. Edited October 15, 2008 by marcello Quote

Geez, 8 weeks at number one should have generated enough royalty play to cover the cost of a promoter and then some. I would hope. Or did he do a bunch of covers? Checkpoint Charlie might chime in here, but honestly here is a variable worth considering. g p.s. Jim generated enough spin royalty off of ONE Root Doctor tune to nearly cover the RD promo. Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted October 25, 2008 Author Report Posted October 25, 2008 3 weeks at #1. If anyone gets their Dec. issue of Downbeat in the next few weeks, look for the review of Groovadelphia. We haven't seen it yet. Hope it's good! Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 Has DB taken note of either of the earlier releases or is this the first time an Organissimo record will get their attention? Would be cool if it is, I'm sure the review will be excellent. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted October 25, 2008 Author Report Posted October 25, 2008 Nope, we've never had a review in DB before. Quote
Patrick Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 Congrats on the success with Groovadelphia!!! Any choice gigs lined up along the mid-Atlantic coast?? Say in DC, maybe for an inaugural? Quote

I have it but haven't peeked inside yet; I'll give it a read. You do realize being in a jazz magazine is bad for jazz??? m Edited November 5, 2008 by sheldonm Quote
