king ubu Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Very sad news - thanks for all the music and for all you did besides music! Quote
Chalupa Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Dang. I'm glad he got some well deserved recognition the past few years. RIP, Bill. Quote
AndrewHill Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 This really comes as a shock. Was he sick? Really dug his music and his vision. RIP Bill. Quote
jostber Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Love his music a lot. R.I.P. to a great musician and composer. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 This really comes as a shock. Was he sick? Really dug his music and his vision. RIP Bill. Yes, but it was not public & a lot of us thought he was doing much better. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 R.I.P. to a true original. Man, one of the most amazing "concerts" I ever attended was the Bill Dixon Group, Arthur Brooks and The Dialogue of the Drums with Milford Graves and Andrew Cyrille years ago at Bennington College. It's one of those experiences that remain deeply ingrained in my memory. Out of hundreds of concerts that I've attended over the years, very few have this staying power. I can still visualize the Coach Barn, the musicians, and "HEAR" the music. Thank you, Bill Dixon, for all of the remarkable music, visual art and thought-provoking commentaries... I was crushed when this news surfaced from various sources this morning on Facebook. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Was that the concert w/ Dixon, Brooks, J.R. Mitchell & G. Sojkowski? That music scared the shit out of me when I heard it. Quote

.:.impossible Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Just tuned in via squeezebox. Thanks. A shame about the bitrate, but I'll take what I can get. Quote
AndrewHill Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Trying to tune in now, but I'm having problems with Realplayer. Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 I realize you aren't responding to me, no problems with iTunes or Squeeze, but his playing often times requires a bit more detail than 56k has to offer. Still, this is a beautiful show. Minimal interruption. Plenty of solo trumpet. A great voice. Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 What is streaming now sounds like something that might have been on Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy. Though I don't hear a telephone. Quote
Christiern Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Of all the musicians I ever met personally (and I don't mean for a handshake), Bill Dixon is the only one I did not get along with. That said, I am sorry to see him go and I hope it was a smooth transition. I did not like his music 45 years ago and I must confess that I never went out of my way to hear if it or my taste had improved. Now I will make it a point to hear what I have been missing. Quote
JSngry Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 So long. Keep the horn warm, the blur liquid, and the plan clear. See you soon, I hope. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Rest in peace Bill. WKCR.ORG is playing his music through the night. 84 years young. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 I didn't and still don't know his music in and out--he certainly feels like the most elusive of the first wave "free" innovators. Even listening to a minute of his music, it's certainly hard to ignore the sense that his was a dark, complex, beautiful energy. Sad that he's gone, but his music is a gift that keeps giving... I think he'll be listened to for a long time to come, and it's likely (speaking for myself) that I'll never get to the end of how deep that music was/is. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 (edited) Was that the concert w/ Dixon, Brooks, J.R. Mitchell & G. Sojkowski? That music scared the shit out of me when I heard it. No, different band. Brooks was with his own group for a separate set. I believe that it was Mario Pavone on bass and Laurence Cook on drums with Dixon. And another trumpeter... Stephen Haynes? A beautiful set in any case! And a long, long time ago. That whole concert scared the shit out of me! I recall jumping about a foot straight up out of my seat when Dialogue of the Drums hit, Graves coming from backstage with wild vocalizations and goodness knows what else and Cyrille entering via the front, playing the freaking floor with his hands. brownie Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Bill Dixon's final appearance was at the Festival International de Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, Canada, last month: Tribute in today's Ottawa Citizen. Quote
paul secor Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Just read about Mr. Dixon's passing this morning. His music was truly unique. Thanks for what you left us, Mr. Dixon. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Great piece by Taylor Ho Bynum here. I also put something up on Ni Kantu. It was hard to write and I can only imagine how hard it was to put something together having played/studied with him. Quote
