he Dealer used to be easy to spot around town but in the last five or so years since I decided I wanted it, I've not seen an original until today. .

The beatheads dig Chico. For real. Are there beatheads where you live?

Is a beathead someone who samples bits of songs for hip hop, etc? Yeah, DJ Shadow used to live in this area and frequented the stores here of course. One of the great old stores is on the cover of his Entroducing album.

Sorry to just read this. I have been so busy lately that I haven't listened to it yet.

Billy Byers has always been one of my favorite 'under the radar' players and arrangers. I am expecting it to be very good.

All of that, yeah.

In line with that, if one is so inclined to consider such things, this should not be ruled out as a possible listening choice:

"A Jazz Journey with Rusty Dedrick and the Ten Man Band" only $1.00! Plays perfectly, but the jacket has come apart.

The used record store I frequent throws stuff in the $1.00 bin based on condition of the jacket; they usually clean all their records.

I've gotten some great deals in the 30 years I've shopped there, including turntables, amps, VCRs, cassette decks, books and magazines.

Returned from a 10-day family holiday in Southern France at the Mediterranean coast earlier this week, where during our stay there I had made the rounds at the usual weekly fleamarkets, "brocantes" etc.

Yielded some finds for my various collecting obsessions here and there, and one of the fleamarket stalls at last I happened upon a trove of 50s party records that had at least a moderate inclination towards jazz.

And so the three 10-inchers and seven EPS shown below (along with six more 50s pop/mambo EPs) became mine for a measly 6 euros (approx. 8US$) altogether. :tup

Usual cover wear and very, very dusty vinyl (must have sat in some grain mill basement or so for ages) but they all cleaned up nicely and play well.

Ha - FOR ONCE a French fleamarket where you dig out more than just Sidney Bechet or the very occasional Satch/Duke after flipping through loads of vinyl!!;)

Dropped by a local garage sale. Saw a stack of LPs sitting in the sun, stacked on top of one another (oh the horror!)

Luckily the sun hadn't done any damage yet.

Found a couple of LPs for fifty cents each:

A clean copy of Lou Donaldson's "Alligator Bogaloo" (BST 84263 / Blue and white label / division of Liberty)

Also a clean copy of "Latin ala Lee" (Peggy Lee with afro cuban beat) on Capitol.

A 70's jazz wormhole

I stumbled across a mother load of jazz LPs from that decade at a Goodwill. All records are essentially in like new condition.

Two Billy Cobham LPs I didn't yet have.

Flora Purim

The Essential Airto (flying dutchman 2-fer)

Lucky Thompson "Illuminations" (groove merchant 2-fer)

Chick Corea/Braxton/Holland/Altschul - Circle (ECM)

Gato Barbieri - Chapter One: Latin America (impulse)

Gato B - Chapter Three (impulse)

John Klemmer - Magic Moments (chess 2 fer)

Gary Bartz - The Shadow (prestige)

Jimmy McGriff - "Flyin' Time (groove merchant 2-fer)

Music with 58 Musicians, vol. one (ECM compilation)

Alice Coltrane - "Radha - Krsna Nama Sankirtana" (WB)

Nothing here that really rocked my boat, but a few nice things. And @ .59 cents a pop in the fine condition they were in I had to grab them.

A side note: the sometimes annoying cashier at this store started chatting about jazz. what she liked what she didn't etc. Then she asks if I'd heard of Gene Krupa...yeah well.

Then she tells me he was a family friend in Chicago and they called him Uncle Gene! Nice

I just discovered this thread and although not all of these finds are recent, these would count as some of my best finds in my 20+ years of collecting:

Cannonball Adderley "something else" a 47 w 63rd mono in NM condition for $5.99 at a local "college/indie music" record shop

Moonstone "s/t" - a pretty rare French Canadian folk psych album found in same above shop in the "free" bin..also NM and flipped for over $300!

Sonny Clark "leapin and lopin" a NY stereo original in EX shape for $10..priced from an antiquated "jazz price guide" by a private dealer...from same dealer I got a small cache of mint FMPs, Incus, and a few other gems like the Jeanne Lee "conspiracy" for $4-6 each

Wolf Vostell "decollage" a rare Fluxus lp for $10 at a Seattle record store..flipped for nearly $300

However I think my best all time score at least in terms of monetary gain(to fund buying other records of course :)) was selling my original "propellor" lp by guided by voices for $1000....my cost - $7 bought new and sealed when it came out!

I've had lots of other finds too over the years but I do find them to be more of a rare occurrence in the last 5-10 years...I've also had my share of missed opportunities and "ones that got away" too!

These finds over the years have certainly helped me afford my vinyl habit ;)

I picked up a copy of The Revolutionary Ensemble's The People's Republic for about $6 a week or so ago - it's a Brazilian pressing, but sounds excellent - and the music is fantastic;

Made it to Princeton Record Exchange today. From where I live it's a hard place to get to, but conveniently my daughter was going down to stay with my parents for the week and Princeton is exactly halfway between my house and their house, so I met my Dad in the town and after lunch went over to the store. Spent a long time there, but I easily could have spent an entire day, no problem. I brought with me a bunch of CDs and DVDs to exchange, and ended up walking away with a nice copy of the Larry Young Mosaic LP set (I own a couple of the albums but don't have several others), as well as a couple more BYG/Actuels that I had yet to pick up (two of the AEC ones). Easily could have spent a lot more money than I did. Don't know when I'll be able to go back, but it's definitely worth it. It's a crime that there aren't stores like this in every major city in the United States.

Picked up a decent mono copy of Tubby the Tenor on epic for $2.00 today, the jacket is beat but the LP plays great! Also a mint Ralph Burns Bijou with Jimmy Rainey for $9 - Tubbs will get more play.

Picked up a Wayne Shorter Night Dreamer LP from an online vendor, listed as a "Japanese pressing". For $10 I figured I'd gamble and hope that it was the King Records version.

It arrived today, found it sitting in the mailbox in the sun. I quickly opened it and found an unwarped, NM King pressing. Yahoo!

I picked up a copy of Xenakis´ Persepolis earlier today, for about US$20. Not in mint condition, but it´s spinning now. Everyone else has left the room, but I love it!
