Successful test for Europe's Big Bang collider 45 minutes ago

MoreGENEVA - The world's biggest physics experiment has succeeded in its first major test as a beam of protons was successfully fired all the way around a 17-mile tunnel beneath the Swiss-French border.

The protons traveled the full length Wednesday of the $3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider that scientists hope is the next great step to understand the makeup of the universe. There were a series of trial runs.

Not yet. Today was just turing the power on to make sure all the cylinders are working, so to say. The actual collision of atoms will happen in a few days. It's as if the governor has called and we've been saved from the electric chair at 11:59. We live another day.

You're really never out of the woods. At a given energy level, there is essentially a "probability per unit time" of creating a given particle - I don't see why this would not apply to mini black holes as well. So if the probability is 10% per year of creating one, several years of experiments could be conducted before it occurred.
