Hot Ptah Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 (edited) Perhaps most of the earth will be sucked into the black hole, but a small fragment will remain as the frantic scientists are able to turn off the machine just in time. The small fragment of our planet, smaller than Mercury, will remain, drifting in space, able to barely sustain life, with only 9,000 people left and only one natural leader, who will be elected dictator for life by acclamation...Sarah Palin. Van Basten II Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 Damn, if the critics' fears come true and the earth is swallowed up by tiny black holes, we'll never know who would have won the election! If you're talking about the upcoming Canadian election, that would be fine with me... Quote

Mmmhhh, I still prefer the old project. General "Buck" Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned? Dr. Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature. Hardbopjazz Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Posted September 10, 2008 (edited) Tomorrow has come, so far we're still here. OR have we died and hell or heaven just continues like before? Successful test for Europe's Big Bang collider 45 minutes ago MoreGENEVA - The world's biggest physics experiment has succeeded in its first major test as a beam of protons was successfully fired all the way around a 17-mile tunnel beneath the Swiss-French border. The protons traveled the full length Wednesday of the $3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider that scientists hope is the next great step to understand the makeup of the universe. There were a series of trial runs. Edited September 10, 2008 by Hardbopjazz Quote

king ubu Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 ah well, Zurich is still standing... but maybe it will take another few minutes for us to get swallowed by that black hole or what? (black hole sun? flash from the past...) seems the CERN was involved in the development/invention of the WWW? didn't know that - funny discussions going on on newspaper pages, for instance here (in german): http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/wissen/technik...38647#kommentar Quote

Hardbopjazz Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Posted September 10, 2008 (edited) So, has it happened yet, would hate to waste my last day by dressing up and going to work. Not yet. Today was just turing the power on to make sure all the cylinders are working, so to say. The actual collision of atoms will happen in a few days. It's as if the governor has called and we've been saved from the electric chair at 11:59. We live another day. Edited September 10, 2008 by Hardbopjazz Quote

J Larsen Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 You're really never out of the woods. At a given energy level, there is essentially a "probability per unit time" of creating a given particle - I don't see why this would not apply to mini black holes as well. So if the probability is 10% per year of creating one, several years of experiments could be conducted before it occurred. Quote
