I heard this barf inducing panflute stuff in the office today, at first I thought it was my coworker Jack who likes a lot of questionable easy listening material, but it was my other coworker Kelly listening to some CD (it wasn't Zamfir lol) with painful renditions of "My Heart Will Go On" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" blasting on the otherside of the room. And ppl complain about what comes from my computer? LOL. I would love to blast "Ascension", the more out moments of "The Elephant Sleeps but Still Remembers", or "Song X" hehe.

My jobs lately have been of the type where I'm the only one in an office (not a lot of mingling encouraged if you work as a bookkeeper, and piles of the store's cash is laying around...) so I haven't had this problem in years. In fact, back in the days when such a problem was possible, I was probably one of the culprits, subjecting coworkers to bizarre new wave stuff and Brian Eno's off-the-wall noodling... Find some of my old coworkers; they can probably tell you some stories that would curl your toes!

I could really do without that (especially the morning show and those idiotic commercials), but at least she's on the other side of the room so I usually can't hear it clearly. Unfortunately, the area I live in now is so desolate that the classic rock station is probably the best station on the air. But I'll keep looking; there's got to be something...

We don't have radios in my office. We have about 10 people who receive calls all day long on their cellphones. One guy has a steel drum band version of "Hot Hot Hot" as a ringtone and the reflexes of a two-toed sloth so I get to hear a few choruses before he answers it. He gets about 2-3 calls per hour. Then there's "House of the Rising Son" guy, but he's in India so I haven't heard that for a couple of weeks. The other Indian guys have Hindu-techno that all sounds alike and none of them believe that it's their phone that is ringing so no one answers until a few hundred beats have gone by. But the worst is the ringtone of the American Idol contestant singing Let It Be; it sounds like Whitney Houston trying to sing while straining to take a giant shit. Every time I hear that phone's speaker unmute a part of me dies inside.

Me, I don't have a cellular phone and use my iPod to keep my music to myself and everyone else's music out. In the early mornings I listen to classical, then jazz, then rock, then Brötzmann - whatever is needed to cover the increasing noise level in the room. Some days (like today!) the worst offenders are out of the office and I'll be listening to jazz all the live-long day. Other days are pure Motörhead.. .

I'll usually have on stuff I made on an MP3 disc at work, Miles, Trane, Stravinsky, Steve Reich, Pat Metheny but sometimes I'll bring other discs too. Joe, whats worse is I've listened to PMG, and I'll have headphones and I'll be quietly singing along and coworkers think its off pitch. I mean that stuff has to be full volume to truly get the best effect, but lol thats funny.

I don't have co-workers anymore, but when I did, the music was classic rock & top 40 - or whatever they call top 40 these days. Nasty stuff - I tried to ignore it as much as possible.

At least you folks have co-workers who listen to music. My co-workers are now all pretty much lifeless zombies predisposed to periodic and unpredictable outbursts of rage due to overwork in the wake of repeated and increasingly severe cutbacks. Anyone listening to music would draw rapier-like stares of contempt from anyone within earshot.

I've been working for myself for years so I just listen to whatever I want here at my place.

When I'm on site I've heard all sorts of unbearable crap, but for years most places have a headphone only policy. And I'm too busy to wear any headphones.

When I worked in a liquor store in my undergraduate days, we were lucky enough to have a turntable. I brought in ESPs, Actuels, Can records, that sort of stuff and it was the only way I could stay sane carding fratboys.

I've given up trying to listen to good music at work. I work in a lab with enough space that 3 or 4 of us each have music playing most of the day without interfering too much with the others, but after some of the incredibly ignorant comments I've heard, I've lost all hope. One person could hear me playing Coltrane Live at Birdland and couldn't believe that someone playing so out of tune could be considered music, another commented on the "smoooooooth" music I had playing (Bitches Brew!!), and it goes on and on. When someone had NPR on, it absolutely drove another person insane- she wouldn't stop complaining for hours about having to be forced to listen to NPR when there was a perfectly good classic rock station that could be counted on to play Aerosmith every hour! Another coworker plays a lot of Dylan and gets ridiculed (Oh, he can't sing! Real original, this coming from the people who can't get enough of Van Halen and Zeppelin and Seger). I now use my iPod.

I used to drive my co-workers at the Cyclotron Laboratory, which were generally good-natured blue collar workers like welders, electricians, machinists, etc., totally crazy. I would listen to the Oldies station while winding coils (which took up to six hours straight to wind) and I would sing along at the top of my lungs. I did it to keep myself sane and to piss off a couple of the folks there that had no since of humor.

I'd play jazz too, but nothing caused dirty looks like singing along to Frankie Valley's high-pitch warblings at full blast.

Mostly awful light rock crap, they call it here rock détente or in english relax rock, which consists to play over and over again the same fuckin' tunes, Hotel California and all that kind of MOR shit. Fortunately it seems people more and more bring their portative players with their earphones so at least they are only exposing themselves to their music.
