Rooster_Ties
Was just listening to the Andrew Hill BN discs with John Gilmore (Andrew!!! and Compulsion), and thought that this might make for an interesting topic. Anybody that ever recorded with Sun Ra is fair game - so that's a TON of people to consider. So... What are the best or most interesting recordings (either as leaders or as sidemen) that included people who played with Sun Ra. WD45
I have always loved Charles Davis on the Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison Sextet album "Illumination." That sho some agile bari playing. Another John Gilmore fan here - he tears it up on Pete LaRoca Sims' Women at a Turkish Bath album. I like that date for the whole ensemble. [Certainly not for the fidelity.] Chick Corea is on it as well. They play in ways not usually found on records of the same era, with these wonderful ostinatos and free-ish passages. I have enjoyed Booker Little's "Out Front" more than once. Julian Preister is on that.
king ubu
Does Sun Ra himself count, too? If so, my choice would be that Dickerson date recently reissued in the VEE series! ubu

Out Front is a great record, too - as might be almost any record where Julian Priester shows up. How about the Hancock Mwandishi band? Charles Davis' also great on Hank Mobley & Cedar Walton's Breakthrough. ubu
JSngry
No one favorite, but Gilmore on Paul Bley's TURNING POINT makes a great record essential imo.
sidewinder
The list for me would have to include the two very fine Julian Priester ECMs 'Love, Love' and 'Polarisation', in addition to the previously mentioned 'Turkish Women at the Bath' on Douglas (also issued as 'Bliss' under Chick Corea's name for Muse, I believe) where Gilmore is in fine form. Also that 'Batman' date for Tifton where Ra and the boys were all sidemen for the 'Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale' ie. the Blues Project. I have a very soft spot for this one even though it's hardly their finest hour musically ! Edited October 23, 2003 by sidewinder
jazzbo
Gilmore with Blakey, each and ever time he was recorded with Blakey. Ronnie Boykins ESP lp!
Shrdlu
I also like Gilmore with Blakey. He is fantastic on the Freddie Hubbard Impulse album "The Body And The Soul"; there, he plays some very terse solos that are quite brilliant. As has often been said, tenor players are usually long-winded.
Guest ariceffron
does anyone know sun ras batman and robin cd. it is awesome
jazzbo
Sidewinder mentions it above Aric. I have it. . .but am not entirely convinced there are too many Raites on board, and it's not that great a session in my opinion. . . but cool to hear. Brandon Burke
This isn't normally a record that I'd mention off of the top of my head but Boykins is on The New Boss Guitar of George Benson (Prestige 7310). I dig it. Listened to it the other day, in fact. Edited October 24, 2003 by Brandon Burke
brownie
MARSHALL ALLEN!!! Amazing player! He was damn exciting (excited?) on Paul Bley's ESP album 'Barrage'. With Milford Graves - no less - behind him along with Eddie Gomez.
mikeweil
Anything by Julian Priester or John Gilmore or Marshall Allen or Charles Davis. I dig that Walt Dickerson as well. One not yet mentioned: Pat Patrick. Did a stint with Mongo Santamaria's band, is one some Riverside LPs. Always good solos.
king ubu
I dig Clifford Jarvis' playing on Freddie Hubbard's Open Sesame. king ubu
When was Persip with Ra?! Well, after doing the google thing and looking up the record I though he was on, I saw I was wrong. Was going from memory, sorry! Edited out above. -_- Thanks for your wake-up call, Brandon, it's still quite early (and snowy) here. ubu
Alexander Hawkins
Definitely love Gilmore on 'Blowin' in from Chicago'! Ronnie Boykins is also on Rahsaan's 'Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith', which I really enjoy.
