doubleM
Wow! A Mogie autograph! That's a rare one, indeed. It almost looks like he put "To Jim", was he f&%@ed up? Either way, that's cool. I have Ted Curson's, Tom Harrell's, and one poster from Telluride the JazzFest. that is signed by Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins, James Moody, Mulgrew Miller, Steve Khan, Brian Lynch, Harold Land and Kevin Eubanks. I'd include it all here if I owned a scanner, digital camera, or what not.

Rooster_Ties
I have a bunch of recent ones (that I've gotten over the last 10 years), but my favorite is the one my Mom personally got from Ellington, in the early 50's -- when she was in college. GA Russell
When I was in college, I got Monk's group and Herbie Mann's group: Monk, Charlie Rouse, Walter Booker, Jr., and Roy Haynes; and Herbie Mann, Steve Marcus, Roy Ayers, Sonny Sharrock, Miroslav Vitous and Bruno Carr. Christiern
This little card was pinned to a bouquet of roses that Alberta Hunter received in 1929, when Show Boat (in which she starred with Paul Robeson) closed in London. It was a token of appreciation from the show's black chorus girls. If you look carefully, you will see Mabel Mercer's signature at the bottom. Shrdlu
I don't know how to display them here, but my uncle took me in 1964 to see the Condon group, and the other day, in my attic, I found the autographs of Eddie Condon, Bud Freeman, Dick Cary and Buck Clayton. (Maybe others, but I can't remember.) The one by Eddie says "To Shrdlu, Hooray for you!", so it's very personal. I got to talk to Eddie, Bud and Dick. Pee Wee was also there, but was sloshed as usual and didn't hang with the fans. I wish I had known at that time just how important and good Buck was. I had only heard him on the "Benny Goodman Story" albums.
Z-Man
Last year I bought what I believe is an original Pacific Jazz pressing of Art Blakey's "Ritual", and stuck to the front cover with old yellowed cellophane tape was a note saying "To Rick, Here's hoping we became great tonight - Art Blakey". The LP was way underpriced because it looked like the note had damaged the cover, but the tape was so old and brittle that it came off cleanly with no damage to the LP cover or Blakey's note. The only other autograph I posess is from Leonard Bernstein. In what I consider to be one of the great achievements of her life, my sister-in-law picked it up while she was working as a waitress at a restaurant across from Lincoln Center that the maestro frequented. Brandon Burke
I've always felt funny about asking for autographs from artists. Baseball, for whatever reason, wasn't a problem and as a result I've got some good ones: * 1958 Topps Mickey Mantle (autographed) * 1958 Topps Ted Williams (autographed) * 1972 Topps Hank Aaron (autographed) * 196? Topps Hank Bauer (autographed) * 1980 Official AL ball signed by entire Royals roster (AL champs!) * 1985 Official AL ball signed by entire Royals roster (World champs!) brownie
A few years ago at a Paris record convention, some guy was selling stacks of jazz albums at very decent prices. Turned out he was the son of a French roadie who specialized in jazz concerts. Among the records on sale (they were going very, very fast) were albums bearing the autographs of people like Dexter Gordon, Joe Newman, Count Basie, Hank Jones, Phineas Newborn, Dave McKenna, Harry Edison. I got many of those. One of the item I purchased - a bootleg with one side of Count Basie radio broadcasts and the other side with Erskine Hawkins broadcasts - was autographed by both Basie and Hawkins. Other autographed records I have bear the signatures of people like Ella Fitzgerald, Jackie McLean, Barbara Lea, Kenny Clarke, Quincy Jones (with a personal dedication). I have never asked musicians for autographs except once when I helped organize a concert by Cecil Taylor and his Unit. The concert flyer I have kept bears personal dedications from Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, Alan Silva and Andrew Cyrille. I also have an autograph from Vladimir Horowitz. But he does not count
Late
I actually have ... Wynton's autograph. (Hey, it was 1984.) After his name, he wrote one word: Practice! I remember he wore funny looking socks, and because I played the saxophone, he said to me, "Man — Trane." Then Robert Hurst said: "Trane." Dan Gould
My copy of Coldwater Flat was signed by Gene Harris hisself, which is quite cool. I also have a personalized autograph from Eddie Higgins, and best of all, I now have Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters autographed by all four musicians, and I think I'm the only one because Ron was slow to get to the autograph booth after the set in Clearwater and so I was the only guy to ask him to sign. JohnS
I don't go out of my way to get autographs but if I go to local performance where I know the musicians may be accessible then I sometimes take a cd along. Kirk Lightsey was the most recent and Teddy Edwards on his last tour. Also came across John Scofield and David Murray unexpectedly at different times, both were happy to sign in my notebook. Ray Anderson signed his cd "Bonemeal" when I bought it direct from him.
