Wow, I'd never side with Lou in an argument against Cannon, but I dig both players very much. Which do y'all like more: the hard-bebop Lou or the soul-jazz Lou? Me I think. . . souljazz Lou!

Definitely the soul-jazz Lou.

I don't particularly care for the Bop Lou, though he showed what a master of the alto he really is on those bop sessions. I just think that he really discovered his voice on those soul jazz recordings and he made his historical mark in that setting.

For me, it's all the same thing. Soul-Jazz Lou IS Hard Bop Lou. When you see him live today, he plays "Confirmation" right alongside "Alligator Boogaloo." Lou and Jimmy Smith are really the torch bearers of that combination of bop and soul.

For me, whether it's Soul Jazz Lou or Hard Bop, it doesn't matter. He sounds great in any context, and I'm not sure he sounds all that different. You can tell it's Lou.

I don't know about comparing Cannonball and Lou but comparing Lou with Jackie Mac just seems strange. They're totally different. Now if you want to say who do you prefer, that seems an ok question. But then again I like them both at different times.

Hope Lou Donaldson is doing fine...

he has a rather extensive European tour lined up in January.

His booking at the Paris New Morning on January 18 has just been cancelled. No specific reason given yet.
