CJ Shearn Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 I ordered both the original which I recently had heard as an LP burn, and 2nd live volume as Wounded Bird just reissued them. I know its nothing earth shattering, just good solid post bop on the studio side, but how is the double live album? I see it has a very long version of "Guernica" which for me is the highlight of the first volume. Quote

CJ Shearn Posted August 27, 2008 Author Report Posted August 27, 2008 cool, thanks. Most live Freddie I've heard from the 80's is a can't miss. Of course the opportunity to hear some Joe Henderson I've never heard is great too. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Dang it. Now I went and ordered both volumes! I've never heard them. Quote
porcy62 Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Found both volumes at my vinyl store three years ago, never regretted the purchase. Quote
JETman Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Another item of interest is "Echoes of an Era" with Chaka Khan backed by the same group. Great record where Chaka really shows her jazz sensibilities. This is available as a Rhino cd. Quote
JSngry Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Yeah, but keep away from Echoes Of An Era 2, a live set where Nancy Wilson takes over from Chaka. Not a good deal for anybody in any way. And if you're really anal about "sound quality" GP2 might prove a little problematic, iirc. It's a board tape or something I think, not uber-HiFi. But more than fine enough for me. As mentioned earlier, the gentlemen came to play. Quote

Apologies are made in the notes about the sound quality, but it's really not bad. Perhaps not up to the standards of the super-audiophile types, but very listenable. I only recently discovered this side, after having heard vol. 1 years ago and not being overly impressed, and I don't find the sound to be any kind of problem. Quote
JSngry Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Not at all a problem for me either. But you know there's some people... Quote
CJ Shearn Posted August 27, 2008 Author Report Posted August 27, 2008 I remember hearing one of my teachers talk about the tune "Guernica" before I even heard the album, back in HS. Its a hip tune. Quote
