Hot Ptah Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Why doesn't ECM reissue the remaining albums that have never been on CD, instead of this? Quote
paul secor Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Why doesn't ECM reissue the remaining albums that have never been on CD, instead of this? Probably the usual reason - $ Quote

A list of the 40 titles and their respective release dates is below. Well, I do hope special price means specially low, not specially high. I have only a handful of these and many are out of print, so I am all for it. I see 5 that I must buy and probably another 10-15 that I would pick up depending on price. I suppose if I had been a loyal ECM customer and bought them all when they were first in print I would be somewhat chuffed. Quote
7/4 Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Why doesn't ECM reissue the remaining albums that have never been on CD, instead of this? Because they didn't do that good when they were first released. The ones I want aren't on that list! Quote
Werf Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 10:98 approximate list price, at least at CD Universe. I'll be picking up several of these, staring with Gnu High. Quote

WorldB3 Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Great news, and good prices, will be picking up a few of those. The Jazz buyer at Amoeba said Survivors Suite was going to get the re-issue treatment soon as well. I wonder if they will do any 180gr vinyl re-issues also. I would love to have a great vinyl copy of Steve Tibbets YR, the cd issue doesn't do it justice. Quote
RDK Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I'm just glad they aren't RVG remasters! Quote
montg Posted August 21, 2008 Author Report Posted August 21, 2008 I have Dreams So Real, Gnu High, and Duas Vozes. Are any of these highly recommended? FWIW, I love Dreams So Real. I'm interested to hear what others recommend too, I'm unfamiliar with a lot this music. Two I'm going to order: Gnu High and Special Edition. Quote
RDK Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 (edited) Some recommendations, based on my tastes and what I've heard over the years. I used to really like the "ECM sound," but have grown less fond of it over the years, so take some of these recs with a grain of salt. The other thing, too, is that ECM LPs can often be had very cheaply and the vinyl quality is often very good. But good vinyl is essential since some of the music is very "sparse" and vinyl noise can really ruin the enjoyment of these albums for me. RDK Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 no weber? then this is an exercise in stupidity. I tend to agree, though not necessarily re: Weber. It's a curious bunch of reissues as most of these were available until only recently. I'd much rather see some of the unreleased on CD (at least domestically) Beirach and Abrecrombie sides, as well as the Robin Kenyata (for example). And if you are going to re-release oop items, why not start with the Mal Waldrons? Quote
.:.impossible Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere, but I am very unfamiliar with the ECM catalog. My brother has a bunch of stuff, but it seems to be all across the board. A lot of times I'll see an ECM record and pass right over it. Probably ig'nant (where'd edc go?) of me, but I just don't get excited. I'd love to have Bright Size Life and Dreams So Real on LP though... I really like Dreams So Real. I don't know what Ralph Towner sounds like, but vibists always talk about Matchbook, the duets with Gary Burton. I know AEC has some ECM dates. I didn't know about the Mal Waldron stuff... I've got the Priester albums. Some nice stuff in there, but you have to wait a while for the meat. Sort of like a fancy dinner. I don't remember Gnu High being all that exciting either really. Maybe I'm wrong. Quote
AndrewHill Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 (edited) And if you are going to re-release oop items, why not start with the Mal Waldrons? Right. How about Free at Last for starters. And how about the Marion Brown and Sam Rivers while were at it? edit to say that I don't know if the Rivers was ever on cd Edited August 21, 2008 by Holy Ghost Quote
CJ Shearn Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I have all the Metheny's they all sound ok except First Circle but the music there I love so much so I don't know. Quote
medjuck Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 No "Koln Concert"? They probably sell enough of those at the regular price. (I'm presuming that it's their biggest seller-- though I've never read that anywhere.) Quote

GA Russell Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I don't remember Gnu High being all that exciting either really. Maybe I'm wrong. Interesting that you should say that. I have seen more praise on the internet for Gnu High than any other ECM album. It was the first one of this batch that I thought I would order. Quote
