Uncle Skid Posted July 31, 2008 Report Posted July 31, 2008 Anybody heard this one yet? This is one I'll buy based just on personnel -- looks interesting. The Beautiful Enabler Rudresh Mahanthappa (alto sax); Mark Dresser (double bass); Gerry Hemingway (drums) Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 Haven't heard it - but as you say, want to based on the personnel! Quote
gslade Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 Yep! enjoy much of their work will be checking this one out soon Quote
Nate Dorward Posted August 3, 2008 Report Posted August 3, 2008 Looks great! I always want to hear Mahanthappa in a little more openended form than on his Pi discs. (I wish he'd issue some live gigs, preferably with some 20-minute blows over those fancy shmancy grooves....) Quote
ejp626 Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 Is it on eMusic yet? (Can't check until late tonight.) I just burned up my dls for the month, but I'd probably get a booster if this one is available. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted August 18, 2008 Author Report Posted August 18, 2008 Not on EMusic yet... but hopefully will be added soon. Quote
JETman Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 This is a great release. Sax/bass/drums albums are some of my faves. Quote
ejp626 Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 Not on EMusic yet... but hopefully will be added soon. They (Clean Feed) seem to update every couple of months, so I'll hang on a while longer and see what happens. Quote

They (Clean Feed) seem to update every couple of months, so I'll hang on a while longer and see what happens. There's one James Finn that has never made it to eMusic. I'm with you, I'll wait and see if this one arrives. Good label. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted August 21, 2008 Author Report Posted August 21, 2008 The Beautiful Enabler was just added to eMusic today, along with four other Clean Feed titles. Quote

The direct approach doesn't always work, but it beats sitting around and wishing and waiting. While wishing and waiting is my natural mode (which has already paid off for this disc), I did write a label about Fathead Newman's Life (hasn't paid off yet though). Quote
randyhersom Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Got mine from eMusic and I'm enjoying on first listen. The first track has nice swing and dynamic range, Thomas Chapin is a nice point of comparison for those not knowing what to expect. Quote
Peter Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Ok. I just ordered this on your recommendation. You better have good taste! Quote
Uncle Skid Posted September 6, 2008 Author Report Posted September 6, 2008 I'll admit to being somewhat lukewarm on this release, reserving the right to change my mind, of course! I think my expectations were slightly out of whack -- I erroneously assumed this would be like Rudresh's leader dates, and/or his collaborations with Vijay Iyer. In retrospect, I see that's kind of silly, as this is a "group" effort, with Dresser and Hemingway obviously having large influence over the compositions and musical direction. The first song ("Acuppa") is more of a straight-ahead piece, while the rest of the CD is a lot more free. "Acuppa" sounds to me more like the Rudresh I'm "used to", while the rest sounds more like the Dresser/Hemingway I'm "used to" (Braxton/Crispell). Not quite sure that this combination works for me yet -- just my initial reaction after a few listens. Quote
Kreilly Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 Rudresh has a new release on Pi as well called Kinsmen. Quote
ejp626 Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 Rudresh has a new release on Pi as well called Kinsmen. Really? Great! Now I really am going to have to break down and buy me some more eMusic booster packs. I kinda hear what Uncle Skid is saying. I went and saw Amir ElSaffar and a large ensemble playing music off Two Rivers, specifically because Rudresh was there. It was great. However, I downloaded Two Rivers and even though it is a much smaller group (and Rudresh is on the CD), it feels entirely different and a bit more claustrophobic and Rudresh gets very little space to do his thing. It's not bad, it just isn't what I was expecting. (I hope that they can record the larger ensemble, since I enjoyed it a lot, but that probably will not happen.) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 6, 2008 Report Posted September 6, 2008 I like the Mauger disc. Quote
montg Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Rudresh has a new release on Pi as well called Kinsmen. Sound samples on this are intriguing. Any comments from those who have heard the whole thing? Quote
.:.impossible Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 I like the Mauger disc. Me too. Quote
