Tjazz Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 (edited) I saw a bunch of these at FRYS for $9.99 Several different artists. Does anybody know anything about these? A quick check at Deepdiscountcd.com shows they also sell them for $9.97 (free shipping/ no tax) Deepdiscount only lists 18 different artists, I think there were more available at FRYS. Chuck Nessa Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 These come from Allegro, and they list 38 titles on their site. I think they may be knock-offs from other labels. They also only have 18 tracks per disc, but some of these are tempting. Quote
ghost of miles Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 BTW, speaking of 2-CD blues sets, BMG currently has THE ESSENTIAL SONNY BOY WILLAMSON on its clearance list for $3.99. With shipping and handling it comes to about $9--not bad for a double-disc overview of SBW's Chess & Checker career. Only catch is that you have to already be a BMG member to get access to the clearance list. Quote
John L Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 I think that this is an excellent series. They are produced under license from Document Records, the European firm that has been reissuing the complete early blues discography. The choice of material is usually quite good although, somewhat frustratingly, they don't include any discographical information and sometimes seem to follow a random ordering for the tracks. The price is unbeatable. They are basically doing what the French firm Fremeaux et Associes is doing in France, although (as might be expected from Americans with regard to the blues) in a somewhat more careless and less educated way. For some reason Fremeaux also likes to stop at 18 short tracks on each of two disks. What is it about the number 18 anyway? Quote
paul secor Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 For some reason Fremeaux also likes to stop at 18 short tracks on each of two disks. What is it about the number 18 anyway? Yazoo seems to have the same kind of thing with 23 tracks on a lot of their CDs. I've wondered what that's about - someone's lucky number? Quote
brownie Posted October 21, 2003 Report Posted October 21, 2003 The only Fremeaux issue I have is their 'Summit Meetings' 2CD set which gathers the Metronome and Esquire All-Stars tracks (with all alternates). Both CDs have 21 tracks each. And what an All Stars cast! The other Fremaux CDs I have seen indeed do not go beyond 18 tracks. Quote
