mikeweil
Any double-tongued implications aside --- after reading through some other thread here I scored a CD on ebay byIrene Reid: In the liner notes she is quoted as being an organ type of person. All of her recent Savant CDs have organ, and I began to wonder how many singers recorded with organ backing instead of piano. I have a Prestige/OJC by Etta Jones with Larry Young, but the organ is strictly in the background there. What other jazz vocal albums are there with organ? Rooster_Ties
Tom Jones!!! ( Oh wait, you don't mean that kind of organ!!! )
mikeweil
I knew these jokes were unavoidable ... but seriously, aren't there any more recordings of vocalists with a B-3 (I'd rather use another word )? I remembered Jimmy Smith's singles sessions with Babs Gonzales and Bill Henderson, but who else, please?
Dan Gould
After hearing Jim Alfredson sing "I'm A Fool For You" at the Festival Saturday night, it is my devout hope that Organissimo's next project will allow it to qualify as a vocal/b-3 date. Peter A
What other jazz vocal albums are there with organ? Quite a few albums on Prestige have vocals and eh...B-3, for instance: - Mildred Anderson - No More in Life (w. Robert Banks) and Person to Person (w. Shirley Scott); - Betty Roche - Swingin'and Singin' (w. Jack McDuff); - Byrdie Green with Johnny Hammond Smith (four albums); - Trudy Pitts (four very nice albums); - Billy Hawks plays organ and sings on his two Prestige albums. etc. etc. Peter
mikeweil
I thought there would be a number of Prestige dates, but it seems none of our so called vocal greats have recorded with organ?
michel devos
What other jazz vocal albums are there with organ? Possibly a few tracks by Shirley Horn from 'A tribute to Ray Charles Also, some tracks on various Rhoda Scott albums : but yes, she's not really a singer, is she? Julie Driscoll with Brian Auger and The Trinity -Street Noise Edited October 20, 2003 by michel devos
mikeweil
Julie Driscoll with Brian Auger and The Trinity -Street Noise Oh, the Driscoll dates .... guess I'll have to dig out the LPs. But overall there don't seem to be that many - and I don't mean organists that sing themselves.
brownie
Shirley Scott was a very creditable singer on 'Like a Lover', the last track of her Atlantic album 'Soul Song' with Stanley Turrentine who was on all tracks except that one! wolff
This probably is a stretch, but how about Frederick Roach's "All That's Good"? The singers hum, moan and go "oh yeah" once in a while. Edited October 28, 2003 by wolff
Soul Stream
A couple nobody mentioned.. Lonnie Smith "Move Your Hand" and "Peace of Mind". Lou Donaldson...anytime he does that "thing" like on "Wig Blues" or even "Everything Gonna Be Funky", ect.... I love it! Right on Brother Lou! Also a BIIIGGG "second that emotion" from the Prestige Catalog.... The Byrdie Green records with Johnny Hammond Smith. Those are bad!!!! Also the Trudy Pitts records...she sings quite a bit on those. And she's really great!!! And last but not least, the 2 Billy Hawks records, Heavy Soul and "More Heavy Soul." He's a fantastic singer and organist. Really laying it down. Mentioned before, but driving it home... Edited October 28, 2003 by Soul Stream
Jim Alfredson
Wow. Pete Fallico is playing some nice stuff on KUSP right now with a female vocalist (who sounds like a cross between Nancy Wilson and Etta Jones) and organ. Very pretty. I'll listen to see who it is. Check it out... Pete's show is fantastic and those with broadband connections can listen at KUSP.org
Jim Alfredson
Dig it! It was Nancy Wilson on the guitarist's record. It's Henry Johnson's date, the guitarist that used to play with the late great Joe Williams and Chris Foreman on organ. I'm going to have to find that record!!! Jim Alfredson
Pete just played a track from this record on Verve. Nice stuff! Shirley Horn playing organ and singing!
Jim Alfredson
Now he just played a track from Gloria Coleman singing and playing organ (wife of George Coleman) on the Mainstream label. NICE!
Joe G
Here's one, Lansing's own Betty Joplin: With Jack McDuff. Amazon has it.
