BeBop Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 Partial Lineups, but you'll get the idea: Chicago: Corey Wilkes w/Greg Osby Von Freeman/Ari Brown/Frank Catalano William Parker/Fred Anderson John Abercrombie Organ Trio w/Eric Schneider Newport: Arethra Franklin Chris Botti Wayne Shorter Dave Holland/Gonzalo Rubalcaba/Chris Potter/Eric Harlan Brian Blade Fellowship Jacob Fred Christian Scott Warren Vache Sonny Rollins Herbie Hancock Lionel Loueke Soulinve w/Fred Wesley George Wein AllStars w/Anat Cohen/Howard Alden.Jeff Ballard Esperanza Spalding Concord: George Beson Boney James Norman Borwn Chante Moore Alex Bugnon Los Angeles: James Ingram Boney James Ledisi Eric Darius The whole festival travels under one moniker, but what a mixed bag? What do you make of this? No jazz interest west of the Mississippi? Relatively conservative tastes in Newport vs. Chicago, though considerable jazz content both places? Lingering content influences from the "original" festivals which are now affiliated? (I recall Concord being conservative, but at least it was jazz, just as Carl Jefferson would have wanted.) Frankly, I'm not sure how this conglomeration came together. FWIW, I notice the co-presenter in Concord is Live Nation Quote
Christiern Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 They should come clean and just call it The JVC Festival. No wonder people can't distinguish between jazz and seriously diluted fare. Quote
David Gitin Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 Yeah, California. What a dumb line-up. (I live in Monterey). Wish I could afford some time in Chicago! Quote
