Did the remasterings for the BN reissues of Live at the Vanguard, Central Park North, and Consummation eliminate the cheesy reverb? And has anybody heard of potential plans by BN or Mosaic to reissue the other two Solid State LPs? thanks, Dan

There was a box set on Mosaic with all the Solid State and Blue Note LPs, both live and studio material, that's long out of print.

Since then single CD reissues have appeared off and on, three of them so far:

I'm pretty sure the remainder will follow. Avoid the LRC reissue of the Vanguard material, bad sound, dubbed from LP.

The new CDs use the Mosaic remaster which already had the reverb eliminated.

... and don't forget the album with Joe Williams, also reissued on CD:

The live CD from a Basle Concert during a European tour is also worth getting, on TCB.

I reckon I been here in Brooklyn w/ my head up my ass to not know this Charles ;) I confess to havin' and listenin' to CDRs of the big set (though I bought/own the box, the booklet, and LPs I-IV from Mosaic), for about a FUCKING DECADE while much of this glorious set stays OOP, but I aim to be an honest man by BN Corp. someday, that is if the masterin' is right.

The TCB is smokin'!

And it's perfectly legit, all issues cleared etc - I guess the other one's just a cheap rip-off... (or does TCB now license their music? Would be new to me, as they mention Amazon.com being one of their distributors/sellers, so...)

Is there anything superior about the TCB release to this recent version, which appears to have the same material for a third the price? Besides the cover art, that is.

As that issue is on LRC, I'd be suspicious about the sound - most LRCs I have heard were inferior in sound to other issues of the same material. As I said, the LRC of the Vanguard material sounds terrible.

About the cover art, it seems to be "recycled": a few years back LRC released a compilation of Thad Jones/Mel Lewis material with the same cover - "Sonny Lester Collection" I think it was called.

Tracks:

1. Groove Merchant

2. Big Dipper

3. Central Park North

4. Tow Away Zone

5. Quietude

6. Jive Samba

7. Dedication

8. It Only Happens Every Time

9. Tiptoe

10. Child Is Born

Nice track selection (whole of Central Park North and half of Consummation), sound not as good as the recent Blue Notes.

Entirely off-topic, but I must add a plug for those TCB - Swiss Radio Days discs!! The four that I have (TJ-Mel Orchestra, Blakey 1960 JMs, Louis Hayes, and Mulligan CJB) are all blazing, really well-recorded, and amazingly still in print at fair prices. I want to hear more. Cheers

That's the cover for Thad & Mel Live in Tokyo.

I have it on vinyl. Very good record!
