Jazzmoose Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Yeah, I basically stopped drinking years ago -- all but the occasional glass of red wine, maybe a martini once a year or something. Drugs, too -- many, many years ago. Cigs is without a doubt the toughest to quit, maybe because it was the only true addiction. The other stuff ... nah. I can't say I don't drink, though I don't remember the last time I did. Hmmm...maybe I don't! Even weed, I'm sure if I found a bag in a drawer or something, I might roll up a doob and relive some memories. But cigs are the only thing that has drug me out of bed in the middle of the night down to the 7-11 with "yes, I want the matches; quit fucking around!" on my lips... Quote
Niko Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 48 hours into it, so much more difficult than last time... hope i can sleep again tonight... Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted August 19, 2012 Report Posted August 19, 2012 Stopped smoking on May 11, 2011 after 40+ years. Used Chantix successfully. My reward was an ugly 45 pounds. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 20, 2012 Report Posted August 20, 2012 Congrats guys. Yeah, the weight gain is an adjustment. But it's good to be not smoking. Last month was 22 years of not smoking cigarettes for me. Quote
Eric Posted August 20, 2012 Report Posted August 20, 2012 My cousin's wife died of tongue cancer 7-8 years ago. I had visited her several times as the end grew near. During the funeral, the pastor read one of her dying wishes which was to urge smokers to give it up. She left behind a six year old boy. I walked out of the church and basically quit cold turkey. I also kept telling myself that it was much less gruesome to die from weight issues than from cancer. No urge whatsoever to smoke today. It helps that in this day in age, about the only place you can smoke is in your car or back yard. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 Today is day 30 no 420 Grumpy as fizzuck Wanna punch someone in the face HARD Quote
jazzbo Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 Congrats SS. I remember those days. I'm 22 years without a cigarette. Amazes me. Quote
ejp626 Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 Just a congrats to you guys who are keeping on giving it up! I never started (cigarettes or alcohol), mostly because addiction clearly runs in our family, esp. on my mother's side, and I knew I'd have trouble if I started. My addictions (basically sugar and collecting books/CDs) are marginally less dangerous to my health and wallet... Quote
Soulstation1 Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 Smoking a pack of these a week is a lot cheaper than X amount of 420 Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 2 weeks no 420 Smoke one grape swisher a day or less Cheaper than 420 Saw some articles on the net about people having weird dreams after stopping Yeah, that happened to me. The weird dreams were almost as good as the smoking anyway; I just went to bed earlier! (Which is not to confirm or deny the existence of any such smoking at this stage of my life...) Strange to see this thread up at this time; I've been having medical problems lately, and the doctor's suspicion is indigestion (although it sure as hell isn't the 'take a tums' stuff I remember!) Now, I know cigarettes aggravated my heartburn way back then, so I figured, just in case, I'd knock off the cigars and pipe for a while, at least until I know what's going on. I was certainly glad to find out that the "cigars and pipes aren't like cigarettes" line was true; put 'em down two weeks ago and quit, simple as pie. Cigarettes I remember being a hell of a lot tougher. Quote
kinuta Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Congrats SS. I remember those days. I'm 22 years without a cigarette. Amazes me. Congrats from me too. I'm 23 years smoke free. I had a good run, started at 10 ! Also 18 years alcohol free, which is a major blessing. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 electronic cigarettes are waste of health and money "Electronic cigarettes are also harmful to lungs, researchers from the University of Athens in Greece concluded. The report from the scientists was presented at the annual congress of the European Respiratory Society in Vienna. Electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine through steam, not smoke. In this case, there is no combustion, but nicotine still comes from tobacco. The controversy about the safety of such devices emerged as soon as the devices appeared on the market. The Greek experts studied the short-term effects of e-cigarettes on various people, including those who did not suffer from lung diseases. The experiment involved eight people who never smoked and 24 smokers - 11 with normally operating lungs, and 13 people - either with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. Each of the volunteers was smoking an e-cig for ten minutes. Afterwards, the researchers measured through a series of tests how the respiratory system could resist the smoke and absorb oxygen." Quote

ghost of miles Posted July 29, 2013 Report Posted July 29, 2013 My fiance stopped smoking this morning and is already going through some pretty bad withdrawal symptoms--migraine, achiness all over, inability to do anything... any recommendations on over-the-counter products that might help alleviate the misery of withdrawal (or prescription medicines)? kinuta Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) My fiance stopped smoking this morning and is already going through some pretty bad withdrawal symptoms--migraine, achiness all over, inability to do anything... any recommendations on over-the-counter products that might help alleviate the misery of withdrawal (or prescription medicines)? Aspirin or similar medication and plenty of water. To help reduce the craving I found that cleaning my teeth several times a day helped. I'd also recommend her to cut out all sweets and booze, the sugary taste that lingers in your mouth just increases your craving. I also got as much sleep as possible. I found that helped me but realistically she just has to ride out the initial misery. Edited July 30, 2013 by kinuta Quote
