Peter Friedman Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I just pulled off the shelf his solo piano CD - RONNIE MATHEWS AT CAFE COPAIN - Sackville 2-2026. Will play it in his memory this afternoon. Quote
jeffsjazz Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Sad loss, wonderful player and nice person. RIP Ronnie, Dr. Jeff Quote
Hot Ptah Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 His Beehive LP, "Roots Branches and Dances", is a really good album. I saw him several times with Johnny Griffin--he was always outstanding. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 His Beehive LP, "Roots Branches and Dances", is a really good album... Yes, that's an oustanding album!!!!! R.I.P., Mr. Mathews, you will be missed. I only had a chance to hear him live on one occasion, during the after hours jam session a few years back at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. He sounded great. I'm rather late getting to this thread as my Internet access is severely limited for a few weeks (still in the throes of moving - unpacking boxes, etc.) So, paying my respects now... Quote
trane_fanatic Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Have been listening to Cracklin', the New Jazz/Prestige Roy Haynes date f/ Mr. Mathews & Booker Ervin Quote
king ubu Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 His 1988 Timeless album "Selena's Dance" is the only leader date I have (hm, no, I think one album of that Alexander/Hubbard/Mathews Fantasy twofer was also his date, no?), will have to play it again but I remember it being rather good: Quote
sidewinder Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 I think one album of that Alexander/Hubbard/Mathews Fantasy twofer was also his date, no Indeed it was. The excellent 'Doin' The Thang', with Charles Davis and Hubbard. Quote
Tom Storer Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Ethan Iverson pays hommage on Do The Math. Quote
king ubu Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Ethan Iverson pays hommage on Do The Math. Interesting read, thanks! Particularly that second point about the Dizzy big band of the 40s! Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 I think one album of that Alexander/Hubbard/Mathews Fantasy twofer was also his date, no Indeed it was. The excellent 'Doin' The Thang', with Charles Davis and Hubbard. When I mentioned that title to him a few years ago at The Kitano, he paused for a sec and then gave a response which led me to believe that he ranked it low on the list of titles that should have been available as JPN imports. Did he view it as 'so-so'? I wish I could remember the exact quote. Quote
Denis Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Really sad news indeed. Love his playing. Listening to a radio broadcast of Kenny Dorham's band at club Morocco in Brooklyn in 1967. Ronnie was on piano, Paul Chambers bass Candy Finch drums and David Fathead Newman on tenor. Also heard him live with Dexter Gordon. Denis Quote
