undergroundagent Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 (edited) Are there any that don't get much mention but groove just as hard as any of the heavyweights that are usually discussed on the board? Edited October 15, 2003 by undergroundagent Quote
Jim R Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 Not sure of its current availability, but one that I think fits the description is THE EDDY LOUISS TRIO (released on CD a few years back on Dreyfus)- recorded in 1968, with Rene' Thomas on guitar and Kenny Clarke on drums. Another one I like (also with Thomas on guitar) is Lou Bennett's ENFIN! (RCA /BMG France) from 1963. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 Great topic for a thread!! I'd be especially interested in any that include horns, especially trumpet - which doesn't seem to appear nearly as much on organ dates as sax. Quote
Eric Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 I really like "Moon Rappin'" by Jack McDuff on Blue Note. It has a bit of a late 60s "spacy" feel to it, but it really cooks. Another good one is "Think" by Lonnie Smith, also on Blue Note but not available on domestic BN. Not really obscure I suppose, but I really like the Wes Montgomery organ trio dates - "Portrait of Wes" in particular. Tough question - this board does a pretty good job covering the genre! Soul Stream Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 The Lou Donaldson Argo date with Tommy Turrentine on Trumpet is nice. Available from Japanese import I believe. Also on the ARGO tip, I highly recommend the Sam Lazar records. Great, underrated player. Also the ARGO Baby Face Willette's are good while we're on it.....O.K...let me just say it...ARGO has a lot of great organ stuff people overlook. Blue Note and Prestige pretty much had the market sewn up, but ARGO did some cool stuff too. Quote
undergroundagent Posted October 15, 2003 Author Report Posted October 15, 2003 (edited) Here's my picks... Freddie Roach "The Soul Book/Mocha Motion" twofer, but originally released on Prestige. These SMOKE! Also, Red Holloway's "The Burner" with John Patton. Maybe even, Lonnie Smith's "Mama Wailer" on Kudu. Edited October 15, 2003 by undergroundagent Quote
davef Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 From the Jazz in Paris series, I like the Pentacostal Feeling CD from Lou Bennett, along with Bennett playing organ on Rene Thomas' Meet Mr. Thomas. Got my copies from dustygroove. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 What about that Savoy date by Doug Carn? That's a nice one. Quote
brownie Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 Davef already mentioned Lou Bennett's dates with Rene Thomas but the very best Lou Bennett album is the first one the Philadelphia organist recorded after arriving in Paris in 1960. The album 'Amen (with Jimmy Gourley, Jean-Marie Ingrand and Kenny Clarke) became an instant hit over here. It's still available from RCA/BMG. Highly recommended session. And it grooves! Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 I'll second Brownie's call. I got my copy of "Amen" from the Groove in LP form, and for some reason I want to say that they've gotten other copies, maybe its been reissued somewhere? Quote
mikeweil Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 (edited) What about that Savoy date by Doug Carn? That's a nice one. I know of four or five LPs on Black Jazz, and he plays as much Rhodes piano on them as organ. They are all available on CD from Black Jazz, BTW. I have them on LP, like Carn's organ playing very much. I'm afraid that Savoy date is hard to get .... Edited October 16, 2003 by mikeweil Quote

It is still listed as available on the Dreyfus website. I like it very much, a track from this was in the first Blindfold Test! Edited October 16, 2003 by mikeweil Quote
undergroundagent Posted October 16, 2003 Author Report Posted October 16, 2003 (edited) You can get that Doug Carn on Savoy from Dustygroove (though they're sold out). I've also heard it's nice. Another few to consider: Charles Kynard "Professor Soul" Sonny Phillips "Sho' Nuff/Black Magic" twofer Edited October 16, 2003 by undergroundagent Quote

There was a 1994 CD reissue on French RCA (BMG 74321 192512): I agree this is the best of his French RCA albums. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 (edited) I'd certainly like to hear this one, only have the tracks with Rahsaan Roland Kirk on his Mercury box set: AMG's Michael G. Nastos says: Baccus is a legendary Cleveland organist - the bridge between Jimmy Smith and Larry Young. Edited October 16, 2003 by mikeweil Quote
Joe Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 The two releases in the JAZZ IN PARIS by Rhoda Scott fit the bill, IMHO. Duets with Kenny Clarke Regular Quartet (with Joe Thomas) I also really, really dig the Leon Spencer LEGENDS OF ACID JAZZ compilation. Quote
undergroundagent Posted October 16, 2003 Author Report Posted October 16, 2003 (edited) The music on those Acid Jazz comps. are terrific, but the design of the booklets are just horrible! Edited October 16, 2003 by undergroundagent Quote
JSngry Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 The Baccus thing is VERY nice. He plays organ so much like Rahsaan plays tenor that I still have to fight the urge to believe that it's really Kirk playing organ under a pseudonym. I got the Carn Savoy a few years back from Red Trumpet during one of their sales. It too is very nice. Not as "modern" as his later work, but still very happening. How about Bu Pleasant's Muse album w/Harold Vick? As long as she doesn't sing, that's a very fine album. LP only, I'm afraid. Quote
Soul Stream Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 If Leon Spencer fits the bill for obscure organ dates...well...he's about the greatest funk organist there ever was. Not to mention just one of the best organists PERIOD!!!!! He's baaaad. If you're not familiar with his work, I'd put him at the top of the list of stuff to buy. Quote
undergroundagent Posted October 16, 2003 Author Report Posted October 16, 2003 I'd put Charles Earland ahead of Leon Spencer on my list of funk organists, though Spencer is definately bad!!! Quote
Eric Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 Another vote for Charles Kynard, who happens to be from KC. One guy I also enjoy is Hank Marr, from (I think) Columbus, OH. He has a couple CDs on the DoubleTime label here in the US. Eric Quote
The Mule Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 Not on cd, but on Argo there's The Three Souls' DANGEROUS DAN EXPRESS featuring Sonny Cox on alto. Great version of "Milestones" on that one... Quote
mikeweil Posted October 16, 2003 Report Posted October 16, 2003 Duets with Kenny Clarke Regular Quartet (with Joe Thomas) The Duets are great!!! Have to check out the quartet - I am not up to date on this series, I reckon. Back in the vinyl days there were so many Rhoda Scott LPs available in Europe you didn't know where to start. I was not as much into organ then, so I passed her by ... I certainly regret it! Quote
undergroundagent Posted October 17, 2003 Author Report Posted October 17, 2003 Red Trumpet still have that Doug Carn Savoy session for $26.99. I'm seriously considering getting that. From what I remember, this was a very enjoyable sesssion. Quote
couw Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 I am not up to date on this series, I reckon. shut up! Quote
