Late Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 Didn't that Monk record actually come with faux 3ยข stamps at the time of its original release? If so, that would be something to have one of those ... Quote

chris olivarez Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 Does anybody know if Brasil has a stamp of Jobim? Quote
maren Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 Does anybody know if Brasil has a stamp of Jobim? Not EXACTLY... Quote
maren Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 I'm looking for an image of a Cuban commemorative stamp of Beny More... But all I've found so far is Beethoven... Quote
mikeweil Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 BTW: whyยดs the Duke the CHEAPEST? ... to give him wider circulation? Quote
mikeweil Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 BTW: wasnยดt the Duke A BIG BAND LEADER??? 3 whites, 1 black - just like population properties. They had to chose but one out of four stamps, and Duke had his own stamp already? But seriously, this is subtle racism to me. Quote
Christiern Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Didn't that Monk record actually come with faux 3ยข stamps at the time of its original release? If so, that would be something to have one of those ... Yes, sheets of these stamps were printed as a promotion, complete with a glue backing... There was at least one instance of someone using it successfully. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 There was at least one instance of someone using it successfully. Now was that Monk or Keepnews? B) Quote
Bataki Posted October 21, 2003 Report Posted October 21, 2003 There is a fine Swedish stamp, with the value SEK 1.80, picturing Lars Gullin playing his baritone sax. It's based on a photo by Christer Landergren, and the engraving is made by Czeslaw Slania in 1983 (Lars Gullin himself died in 1976). Quote
EKE BBB Posted January 17, 2007 Author Report Posted January 17, 2007 The French Post Offices issued last year a series of six stamps on jazz greats (Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Stephane Grapelli and Michel Petrucciani) by Raymond Moretti, an artist I don't like much. Couldn't find images of them. Quote
EKE BBB Posted January 17, 2007 Author Report Posted January 17, 2007 A few more jazz related oeuvres by Moretti (1/2): Oscar Peterson, 1968 Armstrong Contrebassiste, 1972 Art Tatum, 1958 Quote
EKE BBB Posted January 17, 2007 Author Report Posted January 17, 2007 2/2 Le Trompettiste, 1958 Mingus, 1960 Jazz, 1963 Duke Quote
sheldonm Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 I have a very nice postage stamp with a Herman Leonard image of Dexter Gordon on it.....I'll try to post an image of it when I get home. m~ Quote
Hot Ptah Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 BTW: whyยดs the Duke the CHEAPEST? ... to give him wider circulation? The Duke Ellington stamp came out years earlier than the other stamps, when the U.S. first class postage rate was less. Duke's stamp was not issued as part of a group. He received his own individual stamp, earlier than the others. So actually Duke was the most honored by the post office. Quote

Quincy Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 They've been out since July but I just noticed them today - Vinatage Black Cinema stamps. Note the Ellington Black And Tan on the left. Quote
medjuck Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 They've been out since July but I just noticed them today - Vinatage Black Cinema stamps. Note the Ellington Black And Tan on the left. I went looking for a postage stamp the other day and discovered that my wife had bought a couple of sheets of these. I'd didn't know about it before and immediately posted to the Duke-Lym group under the subject line "Forty-two Cent Stomp". (And I don't usually like puns.) Quote
