Parkertown Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 One two, buckle my shoe... Three four, ... Five six, pick up sticks...right? Quote
mikelz777 Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 (edited) One, two, buckle my shoe. Three, four, shut the door. Five, six, pick up sticks. Seven, eight, lay them straight. Nine, ten, begin again. (?) I'm not sure about that last line. Maybe "Nine, ten, start over again." Edited June 14, 2008 by mikelz777 Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 "big fat hen" Yes, that's the version we have over here, too. Which is really quite odd. MG Quote

seeline Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 Check out the Opies' books, they print a lot of these rhymes in all the variants. Yes, they're great. I found this site, in case anyone's interested: http://www.amherst.edu/~rjyanco94/literatu...goose/menu.html The Wiki entry on this rhyme claims that it's "about" the bubonic plague in London, but that sounds apocryphal to me. (Kinda like the Snopes entry on Sing a Song of Sixpence, which is their own nod and wink toward the creation of urban legends.) Quote
Chas Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 Tell me I'm not the only one for whom this rhyme comes to mind.... One two three A little fool I want to be Two three four You can give me more Five six seven I don't want to wait for heaven Nine ten eleven Going back to seven Seven eight nine Kann denn das noch sein Quote

The one that's generally believed to have originated with the Black Death is "Ring around the roses". MG Quote

The Snopes spoof page on Sing as Song of Sixpence has actually been reported as fact. I have to say that I fell for it myself when I 1st saw it. They're very convincing! Quote
