Hot Ptah Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 I love Lester Bowie's recordings, and have heard the ones that are easy to know about, such as his solo albums, the Brass Fantasy albums, the Art Ensemble of Chicago albums, the New Directions albums, David Bowie's album, the Skatalites album, the album by the group from Poland (can't remember its name). Does anyone have examples of obscure or not well known albums that he appeared on? I want to check out more. Quote

randyhersom Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 The Horo 2 LP set with a tribute to Fela. Never on CD, but perhaps someone has it on CDR Quote
Hot Ptah Posted June 13, 2008 Author Report Posted June 13, 2008 (edited) The Horo 2 LP set with a tribute to Fela. Never on CD, but perhaps someone has it on CDR I actually own that one on LP. I did not realize at the time how fortunate it was that I bought several Horo sets at Schoolkids Records in Ann Arbor in 1978--81. Edited June 13, 2008 by Hot Ptah Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 His two appearances on James Carter's Conversin' with the Elders are pretty cool too. "Atitled Valse" is delightfully tongue-in-cheek and "Freereggaehibop" grooves along nicely. I'm not a big fan of some of the rest of this album but the tracks with Lester are well worth a listen. They're definitely in a very different mood than the other discs recommended so far in this thread. Another one I like a lot is Hello Dolly on Muse, which may be rather hard to find. And I totally agree with ct on Gittin' to Know Y'all. That one is guaranteed to clear the wax out of your ears and the cobwebs out of your brain. Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 (edited) ...David Bowie's album... Just wanted to put in a plug for this David Bowie date -- Black Tie, White Noise -- which I think is both a rather underrated David Bowie album (full disclosure: my favorite Bowie is everything after and including Tin Machine), and also some rather fine Lester Bowie in a pop context. (And in forum posts elsewhere, I'm always fond of slyly mentioning David's brother Lester guesting on the album. ) Edited June 13, 2008 by Rooster_Ties Quote

Hot Ptah Posted June 14, 2008 Author Report Posted June 14, 2008 Joseph. That's just a bit too pithy for me. Do you mean Joseph Jarman or Joseph Bowie, and if so, which albums? Quote

"Cool" is a very fine piece of music. I have to get that one. I should mention that in addition to the three Bowie trio tracks, there are a couple of cuts reissued from Frank Lowe's Inappropriate Choices CD, and two cuts with Bill Laswell on electronics. I don't care for the Laswells, but they're the last two tracks, and I turn it off there. Quote
Hoppy T. Frog Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 He's on Fela's Black President album. Is he on the original recording, or Bill Laswell's overdubs? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 Joseph. That's just a bit too pithy for me. Do you mean Joseph Jarman or Joseph Bowie, and if so, which albums? In response to The Flam - it's Joseph Bowie on trombone, not Lester Bowie on trumpet. The trumpet is Leo Smith. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 He's on Fela's Black President album. Is he on the original recording, or Bill Laswell's overdubs? I don't have the originals of the two LPs included in "Black President" on Arista, but the sleeve notes of the British Arista release say nothing about Laswell, so I think we may take it that there are no Laswell overdubs on my copy. But Lester Bowie is on it. He doesn't solo, however, as far as I can tell. It is also not clear whether he was on the "Sorrow tears and blood" LP, originally issued in 1977 on Kalakuta, or "ITT: International thief thief" issued in 1979 on Kalakuta. These are the two LPs included in the Arista compilation (one LP on each side). Bowie also appeared on Fela Kuti's "Perambulator", Lagos International LIR6, recorded in 1983. Again, it's not clear to me that he solos on side 1, the title track. He may solo on side 2, "Frustration", but that is pressed so off-centre that it's more or less unplayable. So I more or less unplay it. MG Quote
Hot Ptah Posted June 14, 2008 Author Report Posted June 14, 2008 i am sure you know of them but since someone mentioned hello dolly, there is also the a bit more out rope-a-dope. two good muse albums. not too expensive and not too hard to find, imo. I am familiar with those--they are great! Quote
