hammondjazz Posted June 6, 2008 Report Posted June 6, 2008 Hello All Would anybody by chance know whether the drummer/singer Leonard King on the "Saturday Night Special" album (1975) by Lyman Woodard Organization (Look here) is the same drummer Leonard King as on the album "Out Of Nowhere" by The James Carter Organ Trio (Look here). I assumed so and it would be interesting for my Orghammograms. Thank you very much in advance, friendly regards Quote
mikeweil Posted June 6, 2008 Report Posted June 6, 2008 I've seen the James Carter Organ Trio with Leonard King two years ago - the drummer didn't look old enough to have played on a 1975 session. I'd say he's in his thirties .... just my thoughts. Quote
jazztrain Posted June 6, 2008 Report Posted June 6, 2008 Here's a link to a website for Leonard King: http://www.leonardkingdrums.com/About.html It mentions that he tours regularly with James Carter and also mentions that he has performed with Lyman Woodard. Here's a link to a discography page: http://www.leonardkingdrums.com/Discography.html It lists the 1975 Lyman Woodard date as well as a 2004 James Carter session, so it would appear to be the same person. The concert agenda on the website of Dr. Prof Leonard King even lists gigs with both Gerard Gibbs (whose in The James Carter Organ Trio) and The Lyman Woodard Trio. Mark Stryker Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 (edited) Same guy, of course. Believe it or not, Leonard recently celebrated his 60th birthday. Last weeks' mini-B3 festival weekend in Detroit was something of a b-day party. King relocated to Minneapolis/St. Paul a couple years ago because there was more work, especially the opportunity for a an education-outreach program he's developed for schools. He still comes back to play here semi-regularly. Edited June 7, 2008 by Mark Stryker Quote
JamesJazz Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Yes, Leonard always looked 'younger than his years' and was a mainstay in Lymon Woodard's organization. He and bassist Rodney Whitaker had an interesting duo years ago- Proportioned Orchestra - (there are tapes of them). Leonard hosted a jazz radio show on WDET during the 70's. Oopapada is a really swinging group, too, composed of Leonard's children, mostly. Leonard used to ply his trade in Greektown, playing on the streets with other gifted players. The man can also sing some stuff. He loves Minneapolis. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Wow ..... he doesn't state his year of birth, just like an opera singer. Sure looks younger than his years ... Quote
