papsrus Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Where I work, we're now emptying our own trash cans at our desks at the end of the day. There are big bins located around the office for us to do this. We also have our own little swiffers now to keep our floor space tidy and free of crumbs. ... The lights in the office still stay on all night though, and the sprinkler system outside fires up every damn day without fail. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 I work for the government. Saving money isn't exactly a priority. Quote
Randy Twizzle Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 They're firing people. Currently there are 7 "farewell" emails in my inbox. Quote
Noj Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Laying off 90% of the employees (including me). Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Very sorry to hear that. Next move is convincing yourself this is an opportunity. It is time. Quote
papsrus Posted June 4, 2008 Author Report Posted June 4, 2008 (edited) We've had some pretty severe layoffs as well. They seem to have been coming quarterly lately. And closing satellite offices, cutting back on production. I half expect there to find the front doors chained one day. (Sorry to hear you got cut, Noj. Hope they gave you at least a little parachute.) Edited June 4, 2008 by papsrus Quote
RDK Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 We're no longer paying actors $20 million to star in our films. Quote
RDK Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Laying off 90% of the employees (including me). Sorry to hear that, Jon. Drop me a line - I'll try to see if there are any openings around here. Quote
Noj Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Thanks Chuck, papsrus, and Ray. I'm definitely viewing it as an opportunity to get closer to what I want to be doing. Quote
Shawn Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 The company I work for (which is nationwide, but actually a fairly small family owned affair) is being murdered by insurance company increases. It now appears that they won't be able to continue providing full medical/dental insurance, instead they will probably only be able to offer "catastrophic coverage" and a medical savings plan to help with costs. This is compounded by a fairly quick dropoff in our revenue stream, which seemed to almost happen overnight...up until the middle of May things were trucking along quite nicely, but since then many regions have dropped significantly. Spontooneous Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Big round of layoffs ahead. Smaller round of layoffs earlier this year didn't do it. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Laying off 90% of the employees (including me). Sorry to hear this too. Wishing you well with future plans ! Quote
paul secor Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 When I retired, they replaced me and a friend who retired the same day with one part time employee. Don't know if that was cost cutting or a comment on our work habits. Quote
AndrewHill Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 It started when they took away the free coffee and ended when they froze everyone's salaries and no longer gave raises; that's what prompted me to look for a new job Quote

PHILLYQ Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 I work in the brokerage arm of a large bank, and they are cutting like crazy. We've had a few thousand jobs outsourced to India and more on the way. Next up is moving operations(where I work) to Jacksonville Fla. They don't want people to go unless they're willing to take a 30-40% pay cut, and their plan is to have 85% local hires(read cheapo labor). I was told that my job is safe until the end of this year, but no guarantees after that. I figure January 2,2009 I'm history, and I can join all the Bear Stearns folks who were laid off and compete for the ever rapidly diminishing jobs in the NYC area in the midst of a recession. Noj, I hope you find something good. Best of luck. Quote
