Late Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Did Bock ever use these compilations to issue one-off recordings of groups that never formally made an entire LP for Pacific Jazz? I ask because on this compilation ... there's a track by the "Phil Urso-Bob Burgess Quintet." I didn't think Urso made a record under his name for PJ. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 "Paper Moon" by the Phil Urso Quartet was on JWC 505 ("Solo Flight"), also a one-off, according to discographies. Some of those compilations also featured tracks not issued elsewhere on individual artists' LP's so they weren't just "samplers" all the way. I wouldn't rate those "orphaned" tracks as session leftovers only, either. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 BIG BEAT STEVE IS CORRECT. PJ COMPS OFTEN HAD ALTERNATE/OUT-TAKES AND/OR NON LP CUTS. PJ COMPS ARE FUCKIN AWESOME. WHAT A GREAT CONCEPT. I WONDER WHO ORIGINALLY HAD ACCESS TO THOSE....WEHRE THERE JUST AT RECORD STORES OR OTHER PLACES TOO? DID ONE BUY A COMP TO HAVE A BROAD OVERVIEW OF WHAT WCJ HAD TO OFFER? I HAVE THE TWO "THE BLUES" VOLUMES AND ASSORTED OTHER ONES, BUT NOT THE ONE IN YOUR PIC. I HAVE THE OTHER VOL. OF IT W/ THE ORANGE COVER BUT NOT THAT ONE U PUT Quote
sidewinder Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 (edited) Isn't that La Jolla bay on the photo, perhaps? (the one that Captain Nemo is swimming in). I have this one on the original LP somewhere in the racks, plus a couple of the others and some of the compilations (including 'The Blues'). Edited June 7, 2008 by sidewinder Quote
Late Posted June 7, 2008 Author Report Posted June 7, 2008 Damn, what are the chances of those Urso tracks ever seeing CD light. I'd like to hear them. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 You mean US cd "light"? They've been out in Japan, all five volumes. Quote
Late Posted June 8, 2008 Author Report Posted June 8, 2008 You mean US cd "light"? They've been out in Japan, all five volumes. Yes. Light meaning reissue. Didn't know that they were out in Japan. Early 90's? That would be a nice collection to have. Quote
king ubu Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Would be a cool Select, no? Maybe they could even unearth some more rarities/outtakes and stuff! Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Would be a cool Select, no? I don't think it would. After all part of those JWC samples WERE out on other LP's (which are bound to be/have been reissued with their original contents on CD elsewhere, possibly even on Mosaic "complete works" of PJ artists, etc.). In short, this would be a Select that automatically leads to a considerable rate of duplicates among all seasoned collectors. Besides, what's the deal about the format? Those JWC samplers aren't THAT unobtainable. They must have been (comparatively) huge sellers in their day. Quote
king ubu Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Ah well, little Switzerland... stuff like that is totally out of reach for me, unless I'm just not aware of what options there would be to get these for acceptable prizes! Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 I was just referring to the fact that these JWC compilations seemed to come up fairly often on eBay.com. The vinyl record shop situation is just as bad in Germany these days as it is in Switzerland, I guess ... Quote
