ghost of miles Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 More sad news from the JPL: I just heard from a family member close to the McGriff family that the great Jimmy McGriff has passed after a very long illness with MS. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Another great Scots organist bites the dust! I wondered who the third would be after Guiffre and dickerson. RIP Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. Though it wasn't unexpected. Thanks for forty GOOD years of great music. RIP. MG Quote
Indestructible! Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Ah, hell. Sorry to hear this news, although hopefully Jimmy has found some peace now. Thanks for all the great music Jimmy, and may your spirit continue to soar! Quote
Shawn Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Very sorry to hear. I was lucky enough to catch him a few times in Seattle with Hank Crawford back in the late 90's...on one occasion Frank Wess showed up and sat in with them. I spoke with him after one of the sets and he was very nice and glad to hear I was enthusiastic about the performance. He'll be missed. Quote
sheldonm Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 I was talking with Chris Foreman (Deep Blue Organ Trio) a couple weeks ago and he told me Jimmy was not doing well.... Very Sad...! Quote
JSngry Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Another one gone... I'm just glad that some of these cats lived long enough to get some "respect" & the "stability" that comes with that. Not everybody does... As always RIP, & thanks. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 So the originator of "The Worm" is now worm food? Sorry - had to go there. RIP. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Damn... Jimmy was a true gentleman. I met him in Detroit back in '97 or '98 (maybe earlier... my memory is fuzzy). We talked for quite some time and he was very generous and gave me some great advice about taming the mighty B3. The Giants of the Organ in Concert LP with Groove Holmes (which I pilfered from my dad's collection) was in constant rotation on my turntable when I was learning the instrument. RIP Jimmy McGriff. Much love and respect for your art. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Another great Scots organist bites the dust! I wondered who the third would be after Guiffre and dickerson. RIP Giuffre and Dickerson were Scots organists? Quote
Chalupa Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Why can't Death take off for Memorial Day weekend like everybody else? Too many good people leaving this mortal coil lately... R.I.P. Jimmy. Quote
JSngry Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Why can't Death take off for Memorial Day weekend like everybody else? Dude, no death, no Memorial Day. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Just to remind folks of all that music, during a 40+ year recording career (1960-2001), here's a link to Doug Payne's discography of Jimmy. http://www.dougpayne.com/mcgriff.htm MG Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Played "All About My Girl" tonight in tribute to Jimmy. I'm bummed. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 THIS IS THE GREATEST ORGAN TRAGEDY SINCE THE BJP'S PASSING. JIMMY MCGRIFF WAS BY FAR ONE OF THE TOP 5 ORGANISTS OF ALL TIME- HIS VAST CATELOGUE IS A TREASURE CHEAST OF ORGAN SOUNDS- FROM HIS EARLY DAYS THROUGH THE 60'S WHERE HE ADAPTED HIS SOUND TO A FUNKY BEAT. HE EVEN MADE GREAT RECORDS IN THE LATE 70S DISCO ERA, LIKE 'TAILGUNNER'. J.M. WAS THE 1ST ORGANIST I EVER SAW IN CONCERT. IT WAS A GREAT EXPIERENCE TO SEE HIM. YEARS LATER, HE SINGED THE BACK OF MY L-100. HIS SIGNATURE ALWAYS WAS: "YOUR FRIEND, JIMMY MCGRIFF". Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 What's an L100, Chewy? MG Quote
Noj Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Damn, I didn't see this until now. I'll be listening to some of his great albums in his honor. RIP Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 I've listened to 23 of his albums today - that's a bit less than half my collection of his stuff. A few more planned for tomorrow - again ones that I haven't played recently. What an entertainer! MG Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 What's an L100, Chewy? MG It's a model of Hammond organ. Quote
