John Tapscott Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Just received this news from the Friends of Big Band Jazz list (of which Bob was a member), passed on by trombonist Mike Suter, a personal friend of Bob's. Bob Florence passed away at 1:04 PM PST today, May 15, 2008, after a lengthy hospital stay. (He had been fighting pnuemonia for some time and all his recent engagements had been cancelled.) Bob Florence was one of my favorite composers/arrangers and led a big band which was often nothing short of sensational. Somehow, the title of his latest CD "Eternal Licks and Grooves" now seems very appropriate. Quote

I have been a big fan ever since his great "Name Band 1959" album .. I will be playing a lot of his music tonight .. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 R.I.P. Here and Now was among the first jazz albums I purchased back in the day. Quote
GA Russell Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 RIP. I have a Sue Raney album of Johnny Mandel music she did with Florence on the Discovery label. I'll have to dig it out and play it. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Sad news - RIP. I have quite a few of his original albums (including the 'Name Band 1959') and will dig these out over the weekend. Quote
BillF Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Very sorry to hear this. I recently revived a Bob Florence thread on this board. His Bells and Whistles, Funupmanship and Earth get frequent playings here. Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Oh my. Sad news indeed - what a fine arranger and pianist - as much an original as the other greats. I'm bumming big time - he was among my favorites R.I.P., man. Quote
