Mongezi Feza, whom I only know from his recordings with Dudu Puwana. Dizzy Reece is another. Did they change their style or have I been missing something? MG The Feza is a pretty loose session, or pair of sessions, cut in Sweden during the early '70s. The Reece is driving North African-inspired music with some very heavy soloing by Reece & John Gilmore over the top of it all. A fantastic expat date with Art Taylor really pushing things along. Niko Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 just out of curiosity (if MG says it, it will be true...) would Horace Silver make the 200 inessential but rather enjoyable soul jazz albums list? Quote
BruceH Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 I think there are other Curtis Amy PJs that fit into the "Soul Jazz" bag better than Katanga does. Unless I'm thinking of a different one, that always struck me as a little more modernist, a bit less "soul". Yes, I'd call it West Coast bop/hard bop, with an edge at times. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 17, 2008 Author Report Posted May 17, 2008 just out of curiosity (if MG says it, it will be true...) would Horace Silver make the 200 inessential but rather enjoyable soul jazz albums list? Certainly. I cut out "6 pieces", "Song for my father" and "Serenade to a soul sister" pretty late in the process. And every cut, of course, early or late, was made with regret , because I LURVE that stuff. MG Quote

Well, I think all Amy's fit. In general, there are some records that straddle the boundary - if there really IS a boundary - and a few of those lean a bit one way or another. You could say the same for a lot of Horace Silver albums as well as Blakey's "moanin'", couldn't you? I wasn't terribly concerned with using the list to DEFINE the music, because I wouldn't want to do that. MG Quote

papsrus Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 Great lists MG and clifford thornton! ... I'm not a fraction of the free jazz fan I figured myself to be. I don't believe I have a single title on that list. Now, if each of you fellas could point to which 10 from your lists you would focus on for starters, if that's even possible, I'd be much obliged.
