clifford_thornton Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 I don't understand why they're not reissuing better stuff from the catalog. Sorry. Quote
king ubu Posted May 15, 2008 Author Report Posted May 15, 2008 They outsourced/sold lots of the more interesting items to that other label - there's a thread about those reissues somewhere else.... http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=39234 Quote
king ubu Posted May 15, 2008 Author Report Posted May 15, 2008 Though to be honest, those over there don't choose the most interesting items, either... Quote
ejp626 Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 The Baden Powell is worth picking up if you like bossa nova, and specifically bossa nova based around guitar. These seem a bit more open/airy than some of his other albums from the time cut in Brazil. The albums are fairly rare, though most of them are available as imports. There is a lot of flute on the first two albums. The third album has a fair bit of vocals by Janine de Waleyne (associated with the Big Six of Paris). There is more improvisation (according to Powell) on the last two albums. I'm enjoying them, but they could be too smooth for some people's taste. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 MPS had a lot of great sessions, but very few are seeing the light of day. I mean, in terms of how German and other European jazz outside the FMP scene was documented, esp. 1965-1975, it's a pretty essential label. Where are Gunter Hampel, Manfred Schoof, et al.? (speaking of which, those Wergo Jazz dates need to be reissued!) Quote
felser Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 What's the cheapest way for someone in the USA to pick up some of these? Quote
ejp626 Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 What's the cheapest way for someone in the USA to pick up some of these? Dustygroove has nearly all these at what I consider reasonable prices (that's where I got the Baden Powell). Might be something a bit cheaper at the usual suspects. Quote

The Boland twofer is highly recommended. Boland's charts are - as we know from the ones he wrote for the CBBB - always a great joy to listen to: inventive and swinging, he is creating different moods and tone colors with the inclusion of flutes, clarinets and french horns in a very effective way. Besides that, the roster of soloists guarantees top notch playing in the solo department: Benny Bailey, Kenny Wheeler, Frank Rosolino, Bobby Burgess, Tony Coe, Ronnie Scott, Sal Nistico, Sahib Shihab. Last but not least you cannot go wrong with the European rhythm team of Jean Warland and Kenny Clare. This is a must for fans of modern big bands. Quote

I only have a few things by Baden Powell but I like everything I've heard so far. He has a very personal sound imo. I'm not an expert on Brazilian music by any means, but I think he's pretty special. I second that - Boland without Klook is the second best thing to Boland with Klook!!! Only thing that bugs me is the sound - although recorded by the legendary Wolfgang Hirschmann it does not sound as great as his CBBB recordings - could it be the different studio they used? Bluerein Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Mike: think 70's. Most acoustic jazz recordings start sounding quite horrendous when the 70's proceded. I think it has to do with the fact the technology became more sophisticated and complex (more is less so to speak). Quote

king ubu Posted June 23, 2008 Author Report Posted June 23, 2008 The Doldinger is great - (some more info in this thread) Discs 1-3 contain all the Philips albums/EPs, and disc 4 is all bonus stuff, live cuts of the Doldinger Quartet, material with guests, etc. Mighty fine set, and quite a surprise, as I didn't expect it to be any good at all, really... That one is definitely on my list. His Philips LPs (some of which were released back in the day in the UK) have eluded me. This one looks like a nice set. Thumbs up too for his various concert videos on 'the other site'. Quote
Niko Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 apparently there is the beginning of a new line of reissues in the cheapo "jazz club" series from german universal, apparently one with complete albums and (almost) the original cover art, at least two such cds are announced for mid october, don ellis mps album "soaring" and Mark Murphy's A singin' swingin' affair not really more information, but i got this from here http://www.jazzecho.de/jazz_club_114603.jsp Quote
mikeweil Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 The Murphy seems to be a new recording, and the Ellis is probably the second most negligible LP in his discography Haiku is the one one could really do without. Very strange sound, and a mixed bag - Milcho Leviev plays very good solos, though ... Among the other new ones is the umpteenth Cal Tjader compilation ... Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 Are we going to get "Trip to the Mars" by Roland Kovac? Quote
GA Russell Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 The Mark Murphy is from about 1966. I've wanted it for decades. I'm curious about the Doldinger. I have one of his from 1968 released on World Pacific called Blues Happening. I like it a lot, and if this has more of that I'd be interested. Quote

I don't find 'Soaring' and 'Haiku' too bad - although they are a little too 'new age' for my taste. About 10 years ahead of their time in that respect (they would have been at home on Windham Hill).
