jazzbo Posted October 9, 2003 Report Posted October 9, 2003 I'm all verklempt. Talk about this among yourselves. . . . Quote
GA Russell Posted October 9, 2003 Report Posted October 9, 2003 1) Universal's music is not included in the deal. 2) It gives General Electric a movie studio to make TV shows for its NBC network, thus keeping the money in house. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 9, 2003 Author Report Posted October 9, 2003 So it's win win for NBC. One of the big media empires just got a bigger potbelly. Who do you wish would buy the music division? I don't even really know who to wish for. Quote
GA Russell Posted October 9, 2003 Report Posted October 9, 2003 Jazzbo, Universal is the largest record company, so I don't believe the govt will allow them to merge with anyone else in the business. Maybe now that Universal is owned by a French company the US govt's anti-trust laws are irrelevant, but my understanding is that the new EU anti-trust laws are similarly enforced. I imagine that a movie studio might be the best fit for a record company, in that the distribution of CDs and DVDs would go well together, both physical delivery and via the internet. However, since the future of that distribution is up in the air, what with Kazaa, etc., maybe nobody in the movie business wants to take on more of the same troubles! Quote
jazzbo Posted October 9, 2003 Author Report Posted October 9, 2003 Hmmm. . . hadn't thought about the anti-trust laws, good points. I just want more reissues of jazz material from their holdings! Quote
JSngry Posted October 9, 2003 Report Posted October 9, 2003 Didn't NBC used to own RCA Victor, or vice-versa, or something? Quote
GA Russell Posted October 9, 2003 Report Posted October 9, 2003 NBC from its inception was a division of RCA, which was bought out by GE. Quote
RDK Posted October 9, 2003 Report Posted October 9, 2003 Yeah, it's gonna get weird around here real soon. As has been noted, Universal Music is not part of the GE/NBC deal, and GE is likely to sell off the theme park division asap. The "new" company will be named NBC-Universal. On the plus side, I hear that one of the new perks for us Universal employees will be free NBC-TV. Is there a smilie for sarcasm? Quote
BFrank Posted October 9, 2003 Report Posted October 9, 2003 Mega-mergers are rarely "a good thing" - especially in the media business. Quote
