Aggie87 Posted August 31, 2004 Author Report Posted August 31, 2004 I had a frustrating thing happen to me today. Purchased a copy of Mark Bingham's 1989 "I Passed for Human" disc, from Half.com. It's a disc that Scofield, John Zorn, and Steve Swallow play on, among others. Even has a version of "Giant Steps" that I'm really curious to hear. Well, I popped it into my car stereo this morning, and lo and behold there's some rap music that comes pouring out of my speakers. First song is about Buttermilk Biscuits (no innuendo there, eh?). I looked at the disc again, and it is labelled correctly - Mark Bingham, etc. Just the wrong music. Emailed the seller, and he said I could send it back, no problem. But I don't really blame him, it's some sort of manufacturing mistake, I guess! Grrrr!!! Quote

Very interesting duet, electric guitar & trombone; I'm not sure I've heard that combination before. They do Mangelsdorff's "The Eternal Turn-on", Scofield's "Gray and Visceral", and then a version of "Alfie's Theme", for a total of about 30 minutes. Worth checking out if you happen to stumble across it anywhere. Quote
Aggie87 Posted January 21, 2005 Author Report Posted January 21, 2005 Okay, so I've finally broken down and purchased Scofield's "Bar Talk" album on vinyl, after coming to the realization that I'm just not likely going to ever find this on CD. Got it for a buy-it-now price of $5.99 on ebay (VG+ condition, hopefully), so it's not a bad deal all the way around. That was the last Sco leader date that I needed to pick up, though I still have quite a ways to go with the sideman stuff. And I know with my luck now that I've purchased it, that will pretty much guarantee it gets reissued within the next month... Quote

This album will street a few months from now on June 7." Not sure if this is following the more straightahead vein, or the funk stuff. Stay tuned... Also, anyone know if there is a service available anywhere to make a needledrop recording onto CD-R from vinyl (for my Bar Talk LP)? I have a turntable, but it's packed away, and I don't anticipate setting it up for at least the next year (space constraints and young kids are a bad combo). Alternately I suppose I could look online for these tracks in MP3 format. Since I own the vinyl I wouldn't necessarily feel bad about doing a d/l of the music. Generally it's not something I care to do though. Quote

This one has a solid lineup - Scofield, Lovano, John Taylor, Patitucci, and Stewart. Anybody heard this yet? This is the third Smith album that Scofield has played on, none of which I've purchased yet. How are Smith's releases? Any fans here? edit - apparently this is a re-release (?) of a 2003 recording. Guest spots are nice, except for the number where everyone gets a few lines to sing a la "WE are the World." Fathead Newman really makes you feel there's a world of difference between "just doing your thing" and "mailing it in" as Scofield seems to be doing on some occasions. Less than what it should have been, not as bad as it could have been, and bound to get loads of spins. --eric Quote

Here's a quote from the writeup I mentioned above: I know that some people may be wondering why I did this. Shortly after Ray's death, Ron Goldstein (Verve's Big Cheese) suggested that I consider an album in tribute to him. A tribute to Ray -- not a tribute to Ron. I've got to admit that I'm rarely a fan of theme projects. Some of them work but most of them don't. Makes it seem like the "Big Cheese" pushed for this more than it being an organic, self-initiated effort. I'm going to wait until the release comes out, but I've already mentally prepared myself for an R&B tribute album that happens to include Sco, than a real Sco album. I get the impression John Mayer was pushed by the label to be involved in this project as well (and perhaps Herbie Hancock's next record as well?): The guest most likely to raise eyebrows from my fan base is John Mayer -- of hyper-successful pop singer-songwriter fame. I didn't know John, but knew his name. Steve worked with John on Herbie's new record and was also producing tracks on his next record. I was surprised but John said he wanted to participate on That's What I Say in some way. Quote

I couldn't bring myself to do it because I don't dig Leno anymore and I really could do without someone like Paris Hilton in my field of vision ... on a permanent basis. Apparently she walked over afterwards and gave some props to Mayer and Sco. Yuck. What an image. Some porno-making filthy rich b**** skank on stage next to one of my all time favorite jazz musicians.
