Dan Gould Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 Carol Fran, Fran-Tastic https://www.amazon.com/Frantastic-Carol-Fran/dp/B00DW6SH1I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468330210&sr=8-1&keywords=CAROL+FRAN+FRANTASTIC The whole darn album! I discovered this lady on the wonderful Ace Rhythm 'n Bluesin' comps and damn can she still sing. This is from 2013 and it really is FRAN-tastic. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted July 29, 2016 Report Posted July 29, 2016 "Pleadin' For Love" is an Ellington tune that few people are likely to know. The only recording of this piece, other than this one by Dado Moroni, is the 1 minute and 47 second version by Ellington on the album - Piano In The Foreground. Here Dado gets to stretch out a bit to 4 minutes and 47 seconds. It is a tune that I find highly appealing, and Moroni plays it marvelously. Quote

Both 'covers' naturally. IMO doesn`t get better than Bobby King + Terry Evans + Ry Cooder and their take on James Carr`s immortal "At The Dark End Of The Street" ..... Carr owns the song, but King/Evans/Cooder come very close ..... Quote

Just discovered this a few days ago -- a lied by Johannes Brahms, "Der Tod, das ist die kühle Nacht," performed by Margaret Price and James Lockhart. It's incredibly beautiful and melancholy music, like only Brahms can do it: Brahms set the music to a poem by Heinrich Heine. An English translation: Death is the cool night, Life is the humid day, It's getting dark, I'm sleepy, The day has made me tired. A tree rises over my bed, The young nightingale sings in it. It's singing of nothing but love, I hear it even in my dream. Edited September 16, 2016 by HutchFan Quote
