Steve Reynolds Posted April 5, 2016 Report Posted April 5, 2016 Lots of incredible stuff but the choice is the second 16+ minute track from "Hotel Grief" - unexplainable and uncategorizable Quote
jeffcrom Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 Tommy Dorsey - Who (1937). I don't have this on CD or LP, but I have a mid-50s RCA "shaded dog" 78 reissue - the same label that most of Elvis's RCA recordings appeared on in 78 form. Once the vocal is over, we have a good Tommy Dorsey trombone solo, sandwiched by absolutely stunning solos be Pee Wee Erwin on trumpet and Bud Freeman on tenor. Quote
soulpope Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 The Lafayette Afro Rock Band "Red Matchbox" .... a Mal Waldron composition .... Quote

paul secor Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 (edited) I listened to a fair amount of Merle Haggard this past week - many great performances. Here are two: "The Man Who Picked the Wildwood Flower" - a song written by Merle's friend, Tommy Collins - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dpmpo5OI2MU "Leonard" - Merle's tribute to Tommy Collins - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZUkzcJoqUI Edited April 11, 2016 by paul secor Quote

Maybe I wasn't that impressed by the bands live show. I probably shouldn't have overlooked it. Quote

paul secor Posted April 26, 2016 Report Posted April 26, 2016 Hasn't been a week, but what the hey. "At the Crossroads" from Sir Douglas Quintet: Mendocino https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=594XG32OGvI "But you just cain't live in Texas/If you don't have a lotta soul" Some people think that New York City is a weird place. I've always thought that Texas was much stranger. No offense to any Texans in the audience. Quote

When we moved here, we had to spend a lot of time proving we had a lot of soul. And then there were the bureaucratic debates: Exactly how much soul is a lotta soul? What are the measuring units? How much soul can leak out per year before you fall below the lotta soul benchmark? In the end, they let us stay, but warned us we needed to maintain our lotta soul ranking, and there may be spot inspections. We thanked them kindly, and have enjoyed it here since. Quote
