Peter Friedman Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Just listened to a lovely version of "There Is No Greater Love" by Steve Kuhn from the CD - SEASONS OF LOVE - on the Postcards label. Quote
AndrewHill Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) Sonny Rollins: "Jungoso" from What's New (RCA) I played this track obsessively when I first got this album back in January; love what Cranshaw does on the bass here! Edited March 5, 2011 by Holy Ghost Quote
Chicago Expat Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 "Dear Brian" from Ellipsis's "Edge Hill Road" - just some random jazz quintet I came upon while wandering the Bandcamp site. Honorable mention: The Bad Plus's version of "Tom Sawyer" Quote
John Tapscott Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Not sure it was the best but one I enjoyed a great deal - "Dobbin" by Pepper Adams, Kenny Wheeler, Hank Jones, Clint Houston& Louis Hayes from Conjuration, Fat Tuesday's Session (Reservoir) Quote
Big Al Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Duke Ellington/Johnny Hodges "Stompy Jones" from SIDE BY SIDE. It's all great, but it jumps to another level when Duke starts to solo, then Papa Jo starts egging him on and Duke finishes it off by playing the highest and lowest notes on the piano simultaneously before Sweets & Rabbit come back in for an ending so fiery I'm surprised the studio didn't burn down! Got to grab that one out of the "archive" and listen to it again. Thanks for the reminder! Quote
felser Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 My great new personal discovery is Malachi Thompson. Knocked out by what I heard of him on a couple of CD's I traded for, and have acquired the rest of his Delmark's. Major major jazz musician to my ears. Billy Harper and Gary Bartz apparently think so, also. My track of the week is "Get on the Train" from his 'Blue Jazz' CD. Recommend the CD and his entire catalogue! Quote

I heard him at Sweet Rhythm in New York. He had Billy Harper and Oliver Lake in his group. It was rather good. Quote
Chicago Expat Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Jazz: "Way out East" by the Wayne Horvitz Gravitas Quartet. Non-Jazz: This past week, it felt like it was Spring again, so pretty much everything by the Flaming Lips. If I had to pick one, "A Change at Christmas" from the Ego Tripping EP. Quote

EyeSpeech Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Edda - The Rumproller...would have loved to hear if Wayne Shorter recorded this. Bet he would have slowed down the tempo a bit. The melody is just so damn SANGUINE. It can uplift you. Quote
Shawn Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 WAR - either "City, Country, City" or "Nappy Head", can't decide which. Quote
BillF Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 Bill Evans plays "Nardis". Beautiful melody! Which disc is that? He did it so many times. I even have it twice in my modest Bill Evans collection. Quote

jeffcrom Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 "Long Hard Journey Home" by The Radiators, from New Dark Ages. (Apologies to all the uninterested parties about my current Radiators obsession.) This song is simultaneously sweet, sad, and very funky, with a swampy New Orleans groove. It's Ed Volker's fantasy about the late Professor Longhair looking down on New Orleans: "Keep on playing, children; it's a long, hard journey home." The Radiators have been together for 33 years; they've got seven more weeks before their last show at Tipitina's. Quote

kenny weir Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 Lyn Taitt & The Jets - Rainbow Valley. Like Everlasting Love, it's a Mac Gayden song. I feel a rocksteady thread coming on. Quote
