paul secor Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Bobby Bland: "Stormy Monday Blues" from Bobby Bland: The Voice (Ace) I must have heard this tune at least 50 times, but Wayne Bennett's guitar playing never ceases to amaze me - perfection! Quote
Chicago Expat Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Michel Portal - "Champ d'honneur" Link to Youtube video of song I was introduced to Portal just this week and now I'm searching down as much stuff of his music that I can listen to as I decide which albums to get. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Hank Jones Trio playing "Bemsha Swing" from the Hank Jones Trio CD on Storyville with Mads Vinding and Al Foster. Hank swings hard and his solo is deliciously inventive. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Maceo Parker "Children's World" from Roots Revisited, and a lot of Hank Crawford 'cause there's a lot of Hank in Maceo. I'm somewhat ashamed to mention that James Carr was a name completely new to me but I'm real glad I heard "Pouring Water on a Drowning Man". A wonderful singer and a wonderful record. Indeed! And now I am taking the full plunge and have on order the "complete Goldwax recordings" and am leaning toward taking the plunge on at least one of the Ace compilations of the Goldwax label. My brother, who knows the soul genre much better than I do, sent me a link to an NPR piece on the label, that's how I found out about Carr. IMHO, there's only a few more by James Carr as good as "Pouring Water", but then there's not that much by anyone as good as that....enjoy! Quote
Tom 1960 Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 "Love For Sale" by Eric Kloss from the album "About Time" smokes!!! Quote

Sundog Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 The new wave funk (is that even a genre?) of Weather Report, D-Flat Waltz. Hard to play this song just once! I think I've played it at least a dozen times in the last couple of days. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Just listened to a lovely version of "There Is No Greater Love" by Steve Kuhn from the CD - SEASONS OF LOVE - on the Postcards label. Quote
AndrewHill Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) Sonny Rollins: "Jungoso" from What's New (RCA) I played this track obsessively when I first got this album back in January; love what Cranshaw does on the bass here! Edited March 5, 2011 by Holy Ghost Quote
Chicago Expat Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 "Dear Brian" from Ellipsis's "Edge Hill Road" - just some random jazz quintet I came upon while wandering the Bandcamp site. Honorable mention: The Bad Plus's version of "Tom Sawyer" Quote
John Tapscott Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Not sure it was the best but one I enjoyed a great deal - "Dobbin" by Pepper Adams, Kenny Wheeler, Hank Jones, Clint Houston& Louis Hayes from Conjuration, Fat Tuesday's Session (Reservoir) Quote
Big Al Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Duke Ellington/Johnny Hodges "Stompy Jones" from SIDE BY SIDE. It's all great, but it jumps to another level when Duke starts to solo, then Papa Jo starts egging him on and Duke finishes it off by playing the highest and lowest notes on the piano simultaneously before Sweets & Rabbit come back in for an ending so fiery I'm surprised the studio didn't burn down! felser Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 My great new personal discovery is Malachi Thompson. Knocked out by what I heard of him on a couple of CD's I traded for, and have acquired the rest of his Delmark's. Major major jazz musician to my ears. Billy Harper and Gary Bartz apparently think so, also. My track of the week is "Get on the Train" from his 'Blue Jazz' CD. Recommend the CD and his entire catalogue! Quote

I heard him at Sweet Rhythm in New York. He had Billy Harper and Oliver Lake in his group. It was rather good. Quote
Chicago Expat Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Jazz: "Way out East" by the Wayne Horvitz Gravitas Quartet. Non-Jazz: This past week, it felt like it was Spring again, so pretty much everything by the Flaming Lips. If I had to pick one, "A Change at Christmas" from the Ego Tripping EP. Quote

EyeSpeech Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Edda - The Rumproller...would have loved to hear if Wayne Shorter recorded this. Bet he would have slowed down the tempo a bit. The melody is just so damn SANGUINE. It can uplift you. Quote
Shawn Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 WAR - either "City, Country, City" or "Nappy Head", can't decide which. Quote
