Dan Gould Posted December 5, 2016 Report Posted December 5, 2016 Keeping in the Black & Blue vein: Bill Doggett, "Anahuac Breakdown" from Am I Blue (Blues Reference) I was so glad to give this one a try on the off hand that David "Bubba" Brooks might be on it, and he is not only in the tenor chair for this outing but just happens to blow one of his best solos on this track. Steve Reynolds Posted December 17, 2016 Report Posted December 17, 2016 Anything from The Ideal Bread the 2007 recording of Steve Lacy's music by Josh Sinton, Kirk Knuffke, Reuben Radding & Tomas Fujiwara is remarkable. As good as their later more recent recordings are, this one is really something. The 2 ballads are the highlights which speaks very highly of the band. Quote
Neal Pomea Posted December 18, 2016 Report Posted December 18, 2016 This is a fantastic album. Rusty Kershaw, Now and Then. Can't believe I didn't hear it til this week! Costly on Amazon but not at all on iTunes. Neil Young, Ben Keith, Art Neville, et al. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted December 22, 2016 Report Posted December 22, 2016 (edited) Mulgrew Miller takes the very familiar Billy Strayhorn tune - Take The A Train - down the track titled a creative swinging beauty. This may well be the most enjoyable rendition I have heard in many many years. Edited December 22, 2016 by Peter Friedman correct error Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted December 24, 2016 Report Posted December 24, 2016 Perhaps not the best track I've heard all week but a Christmas track that had me welling up yesterday: I've played this on a Xmas compilation for years and always loved the chord sequence, every line different. But (as usual) I'd never listened to the lyrics. For some reason I did yesterday and they are devastating. The pay-off is in the last line. Sentimental, a bit 'pretty' in the instrumentation, yes. But, oh dear... (ignore the powerpoint) Quote
BillF Posted December 24, 2016 Report Posted December 24, 2016 (edited) "Embraceable You" from this. Bird's classic solo re-heard. Edited December 24, 2016 by BillF Quote

Peter Friedman Posted January 5, 2017 Report Posted January 5, 2017 (edited) The tune "Blue Monk" from Curtis Fuller - Fire And Filigree in the Bee Hive Sessions Mosaic Box. It is the solo on this track by Sal Nistico that is extremely good. Sal is at his very best here and his playing makes this the best track I have heard this week. John Tapscott Posted January 23, 2017 Report Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) "Stuffy" from this wonderful record. Hawk is in exuberant form on this track, and the "Three Bosses" rhythm section (Powell, Pettiford and Clarke) is excellent on the tracks with Hawk and on the five trio tracks as well. I hadn't listened to this one for some years, but it's one of the best records I've heard recently. Edited January 23, 2017 by John Tapscott Quote
Matthew Posted February 3, 2017 Report Posted February 3, 2017 Frank Foster: The House That Love Built. What a beautiful rendition. Quote

jazzbo Posted February 3, 2017 Author Report Posted February 3, 2017 This week it's "The Lady is a Tramp" by Tony Bennett from "Perfectly Frank." Just for the Ralph Sharon solo in an Ellingtonian/Monkian manner. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted February 3, 2017 Report Posted February 3, 2017 Absolutely marvelous playing by Pee Wee Russell and Bud Freeman, especially on these two tracks: Home Cooking (11-17-33) and Beat To The Socks (1-17-38) Quote
John Tapscott Posted February 4, 2017 Report Posted February 4, 2017 (edited) Listened through the Bill Evans 9 CD Fantasy set this week: 2 tracks really stood out for me (out of so many great tracks) "Bass Face" from and "Eiderdown" from I'd forgotten how good both these albums are; especially the latter which has outstanding playing from both Warne and Lee.
