mjazzg Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Last track on Other Violets I believe that tenor playing at the end might be the last John Tchicai on record and it is stunning and almost otherworldly It is preceded by a studied yet intense drum solo by Tim Daisy and the tune by Jeb Bishop is post bop swing and groove and it's finest Synergy! I just ordered this today after it popped into my mind last night. $5.50. damn, that's got to be the bargain of the day! Quote

BillF Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 (edited) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-darWpcoOKs This is lovely - comes at the end of the third disc of Jordi Savall's cruise round various cultures of the Med: What language is that in? Catalan? Edited February 1, 2014 by BillF Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Not sure. I don't have the liner notes. It appears to be a contemporary song with music by Savall - so it might be Catalan. The rest of the set is trad. arr. from across the Med but this one seems to be a specifically written song. Quote

Think it must be Catalan when I read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordi_Savall Notice he has the same Christian name as a controversial jazz record entrepreneur from Barcelona. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 5, 2014 Author Report Posted February 5, 2014 "You Don't Know What Love Is" sung and played by Eliane Elias from her Chet Baker tribute cd, "I Thought About You." It got me. It's a lonely time. Quote

paul secor Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 Willie Walker: "South Carolina Rag" from Mama Let Me Lay It on Your (Yazoo) Willie Walker only recorded a handful of sides before he passed, but they were enough to make his reputation as one of the finest guitarists in the history of the blues. danasgoodstuff Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 From James Brown's "Soul Pride: The Instrumentals"--The King Tighten Up (with an extended jazz trumpet solo by Waymon Reed, which is exciting) Waymon Reed had an interesting career, for a musician few people have heard of. Worked with Ira Sullivan, James Brown, Count Basie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, All Star Trumpet Spectacular and Sarah Vaughan (to whom he was married), before dying of cancer. Nice leader date on Artists House, IIRC Quote
John Tapscott Posted February 19, 2014 Report Posted February 19, 2014 "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" -- 11 plus minutes of joyous, uplifting, hard swing. From: This music is 20 years old. Hard to believe that Nick, John and Dick have left us. Of all the wonderful Nick Brignola CD's on Reservoir this one may be my favorite. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted February 19, 2014 Report Posted February 19, 2014 (edited) Handel "Eternal Source of Light Divine" I believe this is something of a lollipop cropping up on Handel vocal discs, baroque trumpet records, general classical favourite records and in it's setting in a birthday Ode for Queen Anne. I have it on a few discs but it stopped me in my tracks on this new one: The way the trumpet (cornet? HIP thingy?) and voice interweave just makes the world stand still.
