JSngry Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 I Only Have Eyes for You by the Flamingos. I just listened to it with fond memories rather than one negative emotion or another... Loveliest rock & roll record ever. I also heard them sing it at the Regal Theater in Chicago in about 1961 or '62. And one of the best tempo/reverb synergies ever. Quote

Larry Kart Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Several from Baikida Carroll's "Marionettes on a Wire" (Omnitone), rec. 2000. Nice band: tenor saxophonist Erica Lindsay (new to me), pianist Adegoke Steve Colson (in adventurous form), bassist Michael Formanek, drummer Pheeron akLaff. Quote
John Tapscott Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Could really chose any track from this CD, but I'll choose track 4 "Mind Wine." This really is a terrific recording, one of the best I've heard recently. I've never heard Terence Blanchard play better than he does on these tracks. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 21, 2013 Report Posted February 21, 2013 "Sweet Mama" by the Ellington band, solos by Cootie, Hodges, Nanton and Bigard. Recorded 12/10/29 for Brunswick. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress' off the Charlie Haden/Pat Metheny 'Beyond the Missouri Sky'. Haunting tune, played here to perfection, every note choice spot on. Has sent me in search of other mistresses. Quote
kinuta Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Has to be Beverley Knight's take of Twist & Shout at Abbey Road Studios. See You Tube. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Actually have two: Night Shift -The Commodores I realize many people feel they ceased to be relavent after Richie left, but this mellow and touching tune became my absolute favorite fom their catalog. And... Stay At Peace - Fredrik Kronkvist Quartet I've never been a huge fan of ballads, so they have to be pretty special for me to really latch on. Most beautiful and haunting ballad I've heard since Branford's cover of Dinner For One Please, James. Quote

John Hollenbeck recorded a great rendition of this tune on his new album, Songs I Like A Lot. Quote
Mike Schwartz Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 Can't decide which single tune is a fave at this point; that said some great tunes on Dave Douglas' new release. Quote

Neal Pomea Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 Going to Acapulco Bob Dylan and Band on Basement Tapes. Forgot what an emotional highlight of the album this is. We remember Tears of Rage, Too Much of Nothing, and This Wheel's on Fire, but THIS one is right up there, imo. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 "Winter Wine" off Caravan's 'In the Land of Grey and Pink'. The care that went into that song - lots of delicious key changes, a beautiful contrasting dreamy passage in the centre, some tremendous (and idiosyncratic) 'Canterbury' style organ; and a totally 'English' vocal delivery from Richard Sinclair (in an age when even English singers sounded like they'd spent too long in Memphis). Still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Quote
Neal Pomea Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 Goin' to Acapulco, Bob Dylan and The Band on Basement Tapes. This is one of the best vocal performances on the album, if not the best overall. I generally think of Tears of Rage and This Wheel's on Fire as emotional high points of this album, especially for the lyrics, but this one is just terrific! And the guitar and organ on it really stick with me. Quote
