BillF Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) Has anyone a current address, email address or phone number for British jazz writer, broadcaster and pianist, Brian Priestley? I had a phone call at the weekend from Adrian Lee who, like me, was at Leeds University with Brian in the early sixties and wishes to contact Brian. Spring cleaning at Adrian's house has unearthed a box containing reel-to-reel tapes of a student band with Brian on piano, recorded at the Esquire Club, Leeds in 1962 and playing hard bop favorites of the era. Not quite like finding the Monk/Coltrane Carnegie Hall tapes, but clearly of interest to those involved! Adrian is trying to contact Brian through the BBC, but I wondered if someone on the board might have his address. PM me if you can help. Thanks. Edited May 7, 2008 by BillF Quote
Shrdlu Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Brian sure has written some excellent liner notes over the years! Such albums as the U.K. two-LP issue of Gil Evans's "Individualism" sessions, and at least one of the Black Lion Monk albums (recorded in London, 1971). Quote
JohnS Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Brian is probably the most knowledgable jazz broadcaster/writer in the UK. It's a shame he's not heard from more frequently. His Radio London programme was superb but he was eventualy sidelined for a more 'professional' voice. Quote
Jason Drake Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 John, I'm just curious.....when was the Radio London programme broadcast ? Quote

Fabulous hour or so on Saturday mornings (I think that's when it was). Used to like the way he would feature recordings when they had their 30th year anniversaries. Quote

It's just come to my attention that, back on May 7, Brian Priestley was flavour of the month. Nice to know that people remember my work in the 1980s. I'm not sure who the 'more professional voice' was, unless you're thinking of Gilles Peterson, who survived a little longer on Radio London than I did. If you want to catch up with my vocal (as opposed to written) contributions, it used to be that Radio 3's Jazz Library was the only possibility, about once every three or four months. However, I've just started doing a fairly straight-ahead one-hour show each week on my local station in the West of Ireland, Radio Kerry. And yes, they are available on the web at www.radiokerry.ie. It's currently on Wednesday evenings, 2100-2200 BST. Someone wrote the other day from Canada, saying it was the best radio signal they got from anywhere in the world. If you can give any feedback to the station itself (requests@radiokerry.ie) that will help me get the slot established and more permanent in their output. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 (edited) Indeed. Welcome to the board ! I remember the Gilles Peterson Radio London show. Didn't it come on straight after your own show, Brian? Edited June 7, 2008 by sidewinder Quote
bertrand Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 Brian's Mingus biography is wonderful - I was just discovering his music at the time, and this book really opened it up for me. Welcome to the forum - I hope you can stick around and contribute frequently. Bertrand. Quote
