JohnS Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Is this the Hal Stein who recorded a very pleasant album for Progressive in 1955 and the Prestige Four Altos session among other things? All nice stuff. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I found him just as good as his peers on the Four Altos LP - any other jazz sessions he played on? R.I.P. Quote

BeBop Posted May 7, 2008 Author Report Posted May 7, 2008 I saw Hal on my most recent trip through the Bay Area - a bit less than a year ago. He played at a little bar as part of a street fair. Sounded good too. I'd taken a few private lessons with him, back in the dark ages...not to date Mr. Stein. Among other things, he did some duo work with Al Plank, under the name Plank n' Stein Quote
JohnS Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Herzlichen Dank, Herr König! My thanks to Flurin Quote
king ubu Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 I happened to stumble over the Stein/Fitzgerald Progressive disc - gave it one spin so far, sounded very good! Bob Dorough is on piano and Paul Motian on drums, recorded at Van Gelder's in 1955. On bass, there's an Alphonso Cotton on bass. Both Stein and Fitzgerald sound good enough, and Dorough is always nice to hear (no singing, just in case...) Funny, but there seems to be a punk guy called Warren Fitzgerald as well, and AMG wants us to think he performed songs by Hal Stein... http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:hbfuxqt5ldke Quote
