undergroundagent Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 How's this album? Can it be classified? I've been told conflicting stories about its nature — one person says Strata East vibe, others say Hard Bop. What's the story? Quote
undergroundagent Posted October 8, 2003 Author Report Posted October 8, 2003 Has anyone heard the Japanese cd reissue of this album? Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 others say Hard Bop. What's the story? The "others" are correct imo. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 does anyone have any recommendations for walton's OJC dates? my father had a compilation disc which had songs from a few of these albums and i really liked some of what i heard. then i see the penguin guide liked "soul cycle" which i haven't heard, but from looking at does not look like the kind of album the penguin guys would like. so that interested me. but i was impressed with the songs i heard and was wondering which disc is the one to get. obviously if "spectrum" had a strata-east vibe that would interest me a lot, but apparently that is not true. too bad. undergroundagent Posted October 8, 2003 Author Report Posted October 8, 2003 (edited) The description provided by Dustygroove seems to imply that the album does have have a Strata East vibe. However, I'm not so sure they can be considered reliable seeing as they're trying to hype the sale of the album and not detract from it. Edited October 8, 2003 by undergroundagent Quote
couw Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 maybe the audio snippets at cduniverse can help you here? cduniverse link to spectrum Quote
undergroundagent Posted October 8, 2003 Author Report Posted October 8, 2003 Thanks! I took a listen...it's difficult to place the music — maybe Post-Bop. Quote
BFrank Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 If you're into MP3s, you could join EMusic. They have "Spectrum" as well as most of the Fantasy/Prestige/Milestone/Riverside catalog. Actually, you could just do the 50-tune free trial and pay nothing for it. Quote
undergroundagent Posted October 8, 2003 Author Report Posted October 8, 2003 Actually, I'm considering buying the Japanese Prestige release. Just looking for opinions before I splurge! Quote
Swinging Swede Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 You might be interested to know that the Fantasy CD Spectrum is a twofer that contains two original Walton LPs: Spectrum from 1968 and The Electric Boogaloo Song from 1969. The Japanese CD only has the original Spectrum album. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 does anyone have any recommendations for walton's OJC dates? my father had a compilation disc which had songs from a few of these albums and i really liked some of what i heard. then i see the penguin guide liked "soul cycle" which i haven't heard, but from looking at does not look like the kind of album the penguin guys would like. That must be 'Cedar Walton Plays Cedar Walton', which was put out on OJC and is one of my favorite albums ever, and not only just by Cedar. It has some of the best tracks from 'Cedar!', 'Spectrum' and 'The Electric Boogaloo Song' and the sessions are graced with wonderful work by Billy Higgins and fine trumpet from Kenny Dorham and Blue Mitchell. As a compilation it works a treat, a great listen from end to end .... an uplifting experience. 'Soul Cycle' is one that gets mixed reviews (Penguin Guide likes it, AMG hates it) but I would tend to side with the Penguin Guide. It's more commercial but again it's an extremely amiable album and although Cedar's on an inferior electric piano throughout, it's well worth giving a spin. The Penguin Guide is correct in remarking on the very happy, agreeable groove of this disk. :rsmile: Quote
Guest akanalog Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 yes i remember the song in particular off of the compilation which really knocked me out had some nice billy higgins and i guess that was dorham blowing a nice trumpet. i think the song was "short stuff". it really was an enjoyable listen. i will have to pick up some of the individual albums soon. sorry this thread has gone off course, undergroundagent!
