sidewinder Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 F*ck!!!! Missed 'em. Probably a reasonable chance that they will be back. This is at least the second batch of cheap 'Last Waltz's'. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 The 'Secret Sessions' and the Dolphy arrived in the mail today. Once again, great performance from Newbury. From what I've heard of the 'Secret Sessions' so far (CD1) the sound quality is quite acceptable and the music is really excellent. This is prime Bill Evans ! Quote
jazzbo Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 It definitely is prime Evans; I broke out this box when this thread started for more listening, this is killer stuff, and as you say the sound is fine. Quote
mikelz777 Posted May 21, 2008 Author Report Posted May 21, 2008 (edited) For those of you who purchased "The Last Waltz", did you have any problems with the 2nd disc? On the second to the last number, "Your Story", there's a very noticeable drop out at around the 1:20-1:25 mark on my copy. It only lasts a second or less but is still very noticeable. It's nothing to get too wound up about but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this. It seems odd because the disc appears to have a flawless mirror finish. It's not on my copy, and I just listened attentively through headphones to the entire track. Contact Newbury Comics about it--they'll send you a whole new box set (and probably won't even make you return the defective box). Also, in my experience, defects like that are often not visible to the naked eye or on the surface of the disk. Edited May 21, 2008 by Ron S Quote

I hope your optimistic scenario plays out, I'm anticipating the hassle of having to mail the set back and fear that it would have to be at my own expense. It's a drag having to deal with it but that particular disc is hinky and I'm not sure I want to let it go and live with it. The first time I played it it started skipping on the 2nd number. The second time I played it, it was fine with the exception of the very noticable drop-out which played both times. I'll have to contact Newbury and see what happens. Quote

six string Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Re: returns to Newbury. I received a damaged Eric Dolphy box set recently because it was packed in an odd shaped box that had a lot of space in it which the packer tried to remedy with those plastic air pillows. Only problem was that they weren't adequate and the cd box was damaged in transit to the point that DHL opened it to check the contents and taped it all back up. Neither the cds or individual cases were damaged but I wasn't very happy about it so I reported it to Newbury. To their credit they shipped me a new box set with a return label for the damaged goods. I carefully opened the package so I was able to reseal the old boxset and apply the return label. So I was only out the time and gas to drop it off at the post office. Not a big deal, but had they packaged it properly the first time the damage wouldn't have happened. Quote
mikelz777 Posted May 23, 2008 Author Report Posted May 23, 2008 I contacted Newbury Comics via email and received a reply in less than 5 hours. They quickly allayed my fears with apologies and informed me that they would be sending me a new set along with a return postage label for the set containing the defective disc. Very prompt and excellent customer service! Kudos to Newbury Comics! Quote

And, as I said, in my experience, they haven't even asked me to return a defective item--they've just sent me a replacement. You were right about paying for the return but an 8-CD set was probably a bit too much not to be returned. I did benefit from that type of situation on an order from Concord. On an 8-disc order they accidently sent me a hybrid SACD of Stan Getz's "Pure Getz" instead of one of my selections. I notified them and they apologized for the error, sent my original request and told me to keep the Getz as an early Christmas present! Cool gift because I was a Getz fan and I didn't happen to have that particular disc. Quote

You were right about paying for the return but an 8-CD set was probably a bit too much not to be returned. Actually, the defective item they told me to keep WAS a box set--and with more discs than the "Last Waltz." But that was a while ago and may have been a unique situation, or they may have changed their policy since then. Come to think of it, on a more recent occasion involving a defective CD, they did send me a replacement along with a return label for a defective disc. In any event, they make the return pretty effortless, and send out the replacement before you have to send back the return. Edited May 23, 2008 by Ron S Quote
sidewinder Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 For anyone who is interested in the 9CD Bill Evans Fantasy set, it seems to be available at the zweitausendeins site (www.zweitausendeins.de) at Euro 59.99. Didn't see any of the other Evans sets on there. Quote
