Get 'em while you can. As of this writing, these are available new from Newbury Comics via Amazon marketplace for $29.99!! This will be gracing my collection in the next week or so!

Right, this has been discussed in the Eric Dolphy Complete Prestige thread. Also available at the same price is teh possibly even better Evans box set, "The Secret Sessions."

I haven't discovered one.

Looking around on Amazon a bit ago I noticed deals on Art Pepper All Star and Village Vanguard sets, and the Rollins Freelance set.

I'm glad I discovered it on my own. I never would have discovered it through the Dolphy thread because he doesn't really interest me and I never would have read it. I considered "The Secret Sessions" before when I found a good deal on it but ultimately passed because the sound quality (or lack thereof) would have bothered me to the point of lessening my enjoyment of the material.

Personally, I find nothing wrong with the sound on the Secret Sessions box! Both box sets are good, but the Secret has more variety.

Thanks for the tip, guys. I already have "The Last Waltz", but I grabbed (hopefully) a copy of "The Secret Sessions" ($39.99) and the Art Pepper Hollywood All-Stars set ($19.99).

Secret Sessions is great! I paid some more for it last year, I think from newbury too (but it was 60 or 70$ - still not a bad prize).

The other two sets were up elsewhere for 30 euro I think (that was two years ago or longer... when the dollar was still a decent currency). Got them but haven't listened to much of them yet (had that project of chronological Bill Evans listening... went through most of the Verve, than stopped but played the whole Secret Sessions, too - loved most of it a lot!)

$19.99 for that Art Pepper All-Stars set is a steal!! It's an excellent box set!

Couldn't resist especially for that price.

Thanks!

I'm fascinated by the relatively rapid price changes on the two Evans sets, and the Dolphy Prestige, as well.

Laws of supply and demand in action. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to learn that Newbury has some "internet savvy" folks that watch threads like this, on this and other internet forums.

I received a shipping notice on the "Secret Sessions" and Art Pepper Hollywood All-Star sets this morning, so I am a happy camper.

I conducted a few searches on Amazon for boxed sets from the Fantasy family of labels, and I found a few other great deals from the folks at Newbury that may not have been mentioned already:

Booker T. & The MG's - Time Is Tight (3-CD) - $9.99

Ella Fitzgerald - The Concert Years (Pablo 4-CD) - $9.99

Art Pepper - The Complete Village Vanguard Sessions (9-CD) - $49.99

Lu Watters - The Complete Good Time Jazz Recordings (4-CD) - $19.99

Howls, Raps & Roars (4-CD) - $15.99

The Stax Story (4-CD) - $14.99

Hopefully, one or more of these will prove of interest to some here on this board.

The Ella 4CD set is nice... got it (and the Basie 4CD "Golden Years") for 10 euro from Zweitausendeins a few years back. Just about as much as you need for both artists in the periods covered.

The Howls, Raps & Roars is very, very interesting! You get the Ginsberg disc "Howl" and a full disc of Lenny Bruce, plus two discs compiling stuff by various poets.

The Rollins "Silver City" is up for 9.99 and the Riverside Classic Jazz for 19.99 - not that great prizes, but I guess they're interesting, too (I guess that's about as much post RCA Sonny as I need... maybe I'm wrong there, but none of the Milestone albums I played in stores won me over till this day... recommendations welcome, though!)

Anyway, I ordered the Booker T. and Stax boxes, thanks for spreading the word!

Lu Watters - The Complete Good Time Jazz Recordings (4-CD) - $19.99

If you enjoy listening to traditional jazz I'd recommend the Lu Watters. I paid about $4-$5 north of that price and really enjoyed it-well worth it. A very nice box set, excellent music and a very nice booklet.

More likely inventory software that automatically adjusts the price as stock dwindles or supplies increase.

Not very smart of them, cos people then won't buy them.
