The Magnificent Goldberg
Thanks Jim. Interesting article. Rather neglected them, I'm afraid. MG
mikeweil
I have all their Black Jazz LPs. They were some of the best issued in those years, and their concept of writing their own lyrics to some real great and famous jazz tunes was excellent. Shorter, Hutcherson and several others gave their permission. Perhaps there was a little too much black consciousness in their attitude for the jazz mass audience? JSngry
Perhaps there was a little too much black consciousness in their attitude for the jazz mass audience? I don't know...I heard them regularly on all the jazz radio shows I could get at the time. Then again, those were all "black" stations anyways... I do think that people who only know Jean Carn from her "commercial" R&B recordings might be more than a little surprised to hear her in this context. She's damn good, as are the entire presentations. Those who worship at the altar of Strata-East would do well to check out the Carns, I think. ValerieB
remember them well from the '70s in l.a. and from their Black Jazz recordings.
Guest youmustbe
Check out the first Earth Wind and Fire album on which they are on. Doug will have 'new' album coming out. It's the one he did under a Muslim name and on which he sings. Mastered from my vinyl copy.
Christiern
Is that little homophobe creep still round, Jim? That said, thanks for posting this, Jim. They were an interesting pair, too soon forgotten. Edited May 4, 2008 by Christiern
Hot Ptah
I have seen Doug Carn live twice in recent years, playing as a sideman on piano only. I have enjoyed the performances. He plays well in a supporting role. He has had an immense amount of hair tied back from his head. I mean, it looks like a log from a mature tree back there. I saw Jean Carn sing in a package concert two years ago with other 1970s commercialized pop/jazz stars. She sang none of the material from the earlier days with Doug. She sang only her commercial material. She acted very goofy onstage. She was either inebriated or has quite a strange personality. BFrank
I have most of their Black Jazz albums. Really enjoy all of them - especially Adam's Apple.
