B. Goren. Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 (edited) It's about time. A great set. Edited April 15, 2008 by B. Goren. Quote
king ubu Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 I guess I'll order that and the Carmell Jones, then... finally! (I have most of the Moncur on the Jackie Mac and the Conn CD, only missing "Evolution", but I hope the printing error - wrong mark from #1 to #2 - on "One Step Beyond" isn't repeated on the Select...) (I have most of the Moncur on the Jackie Mac and the Conn CD, only missing "Evolution", but I hope the printing error - wrong mark from #1 to #2 - on "One Step Beyond" isn't repeated on the Select...) It's not...and the alternate is at the beginning of the second disc (if I'm remembering correctly). Looking at the email from Mosaic and wondering what the hell a "SELET" is? Quote
Swinging Swede Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Well, Booby and Handcock are both playing on it, so why not a Selet? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Just called CT, and there's a little over 300 left. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Personally I have everything on it on CD already except Hipnosis, which I would like to have. But should I buy the whole Sele(c)t for it, or wait for a possible Conn? Quote

Swinging Swede Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Or Clark Terry. Actually this question came up recently, and this was the answer then: CT = Cecil Taylor? Yep. Not sure that it's applicable now! Quote

BFrank Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 I might have to order that one. It's been on my list for a while. I have a couple of those on vinyl, but having it all together in that box on CD seems like a good idea. Quote
king ubu Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 I just sent in an order for the Moncur and Carmell Jones Selects... wanted the Jones ever since it came out, and the Moncur to me will also be a first with regard to "Evolution" (in addition to "Hipnosis"), and that's an album I've wanted to hear for a loooooooooooooooooong time, so I'll be quite happy with this Select as well! I wonder, will these sell out more or less chronogically (hell yeah, selets sell out chronogically, ask booby or booger, they shall know!)? I have #3 and #4, but after that I only have the Hills and five or six more, and the first one I really wonder if I need it will be #5, the Chambers, as I have all the music, though the Jazz West quartet with Trane and the pianoless shorter session with more horns only on that brown BN double LP set... Claude Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Looking at the email from Mosaic and wondering what the hell a "SELET" is? It's a Select with a wrong track on disc one Quote
montg Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Prior to purchasing this box a few years ago, I didn't have any of this music--so it was all completely new to me. Like so many other Mosaic sets, taking a chance opened up a new doorway. In this case to the 'freebop' Blue Note material (Dolphy, Rivers, Hill etc.) that I've subsequently purchased and now absolutely cherish. Quote
Big Al Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Great set! If I could change anything on it, I would've combined the 'Bout Soul tracks on the same disc as Some Other Stuff, leaving the Hipnosis tracks with Evolution. The feel of those sessions complement each other well and feel out of place on their current discs. That and the fact that 'Bout Soul is noise to my ears and Some Other Stuff puts me to sleep every time I hear it. Quote

Ron S Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 Moncur Select is now in "Last Chance." Quote
sal Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 I'd call all of the music on this set, minus the Bout Soul tracks, essential. One of my absolute favorites. Quote
Brute Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 FYI, I was at Jazz Record Mart in Chicago a few weeks ago and they still had at least one copy of this set available. Quote
Parkertown Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 "Mr. Dudley"? 'Bout Soul is essential...to me at least. Quote
Brute Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 I loooove Brute's avatar! Thanks, Big Al! I am definitely a big fan! Quote
